Gianyar is the capital of the Gianyar kabupaten (regency), the same regency that includes the town of Ubud. Your reasons for going to Gianyar may vary and the most common reason is you are just passing through on your way to East Bali or Kintamani. I wanted to take another quick peak at Gianyar and Monday rode out via Kerobokan and Denpasar. Traffic was heavy at 10am and not really a pleasant ride but tourists staying in Kuta can go via Sanur and the coastal highway. Just over an hour I was close to Gianyar and eventually came to the familiar landmark downtown, of the huge white statues of Krisna on his 3-horse chariot and Vishnu on the shoulders of the winged horse Garuda. You'll find many large statues at intersections in Bali including ones of soldiers shooting a pistol.
I like the Hindu gods better and they can make good reference points. The main street in Gianyar is Jl. Ngurah Rai and that was my next stop.
