This morning while in Bintang supermarket in Seminyak, buying fruit for Ika, I stopped to browse the book section Bintang has a nice little collection of books on Bali and they cover a wide range of subjects. One of the books I looked at was all about 'Bali Chic' the tropical fantasy style that incorporates elements from all over Indonesia. The book, Bali: A Travelers Companion, features stunning photos of some of the 'not to miss' luxury places on the island, including restaurants, such as Ku De Ta and hotels, such as the Alila Manggis.
There are a ton of books on Balinese gardens, tropical design and interior design. I can imagine how a new expat can go over the top trying to create their dream house complete with every amenity and styling twist. These books give us a look at how people who know what they are doing handle it.
Another book I checked out was Surfing Indonesia. This book details he famous surf breaks all over the country and gives background history. All the cool stuff about how Uluwatu and G-and were discovered and how to handle them. They even had a page on Bali's first surfer, Bob Koke. I'm not a surfer, but I have traveled with a backpack and can sense the excitement and spirit of adventure that these guys had looking for the perfect wave in a 'surf unexplored country'.
