An unlikely place with some Surprises

For some unknown reason, a lot of restorans on Poppies Lane 1 closed early last night. Candika and I bumped into Josh and we Three Musketeers strode off to fight the good fight against starvation (minus horses and swords!). We came across a small, strange-looking hole-in-the-wall joint with a little sign hanging from a bamboo pole. When it comes to hunger, the Three Musketeers ain’t fussy!.

The Jazz Inn Bar & Restoran is…er…different. It looks cramped, and once inside, well, it is!. But what superb atmosphere!. The place reminded me of a shack on a beach that had been thrown together. There is a bar overlooking the street where those averse to getting obliterated can prop their elbows, and behind that, four or five tables and chairs. There is a two table upstairs section that overlooks the whole interior of the place. To get up there is a hoot!. About five rickety and steep wooden steps are hilarious to climb. Hey, this place has bizarre character!.

The dirty menu (no, not porno!) was full of the usual Bali warung fare. After sweeping aside a few adventueous ants and an odd-looking spider, it was time to take the plunge and order. Josh and I reckoned if we had Mexican, then the chilli’s would kill anything!.

Candika was playing it safe!. It was NASI GORENG (Rp9,000) for her cos she figured ‘Go Indo, be safe, eat Indo’. She said that she would explain that one later. Candika never stopped eating until the plate was clean!. She said it was the BEST Nasi Goreng she had ever eaten. It was very spicy, and the rice cooked to absolute perfection.

Josh was doing his I’m-a-brave-man impression and ordered an entree. A SALSA DIP (Rp6,000) that according to him was much better than average. For the main tucker Josh ordered CHICKEN ENCHILADAS with extra Avocado (Rp16,500). Josh gave them a ‘double thumbs-up’. Not bad coming from a Californian who eats a lot of Mexican tucker at home!.

NACHOS SUPREME (Rp15,000) was my choice. Very spicy and very hot!. The chilli seeds were a pretty colour and soon numbed my lips, but the meal was superb. My only complaint would be that there wasn’t enough cheese on top of the Nachos. Picky ain’t I just!. Seriously though. it was bloody damn good tucker!.

For this place I am going to ‘break a rule’ and rate each of the sections. I reckon this place deserves it!.

Atmosphere: 8 for Character.
Food Quality: 7.5
Service: 8 for the laughter and conversation.
Rating: 8

Try this place just for the experience!. Josh never went to the loo, and so there is no rating from him.

Barrie you found my favorite hang out. You can always count on interesting conversation and the best spot in Kuta for the fine act of people watching. The mexican food is always a surprize. Their fish and chips are worth another go around. Good thing Josh didn’t try out the bathroom. A low duck is required to avoid head bumping. As Poppies I is my stomping ground, I totally disagree with your review of Secret Garden. What was up with that? Love their seafood curry. I saw you one evening at internet outpost but was a bit rude breaking into your conversation with Nick and never introducing myself. Hope there is a next time to make it up to you. Cheers, Deb

Hi Deb,

Sorry you didn’t introduce yourself cos I am always interested in meeting interesting people like yourself. Don’t hesitate to come and have a chat next time!

Yeah, I loved the Jazz Inn because it has a unique character and is a pleasure to eat there. With regards to the Secret Garden, I can understand the flak I copped for writing what I did, but ya gotta remember that my reports are ‘on the night’. I concede the fact maybe the staff etc were having a bad day AND I will return there to eat once more. In fact, I have done this with many restaurants I have reviewed. I will let you know my second opinion soon.

Hi Debs, Barrie and Nick

Francis place can look a bit scary but the food is great and service can’t be beat. Have to agree with Debs about The Secret Garden, never had a bad meal there and great staff and service.

Give it another go and see you all again soon in Bali.

Debs don’t drink the place dry and we might fianlly meet up one of these trips
