A night in Lovina Bali

The north coast of Bali is a different scene than the one we are used to in Kuta / Seminyak. No big expat community or overpowering tourist scene or much nightlife.

Sean, Chris and I drove our rented Kijang over the mountains past Juliana’s home village of Baturiti and past lake Bratan. We swung through to the coast and headed west from Singaraja to Lovina. The area that calls itself Lovina is actually several villages that have developed in a ribbon like fashion along thew northern coastal road.

I visited 10 years ago and back then I found quite a few backpack type travelers. These there are not too many of any kind of tourist, but I can tell the area is geared towards mid range tourists. The place we’re staying, Hotel Nugraha is slightly to the west of Loviina and their asking price was 350,000rp for a twin room. We got 2 rooms for 500,000rp and this includes breakfast. Room s are a bit small and are very clean with AC and bathroom accessories.

The Nugraha is located next to the beach which is dark volcanic sand. When the tide is out it isn’t that attractive but when the tide is in you can swim quite far in still water and only be in 4 feet of water.

The road is close to the hotel so traffic noise is a constant.

Right now we’re in a very slow internet cafe 5 minutes from the hotel and will head for Amed and Ujung shortly. Its rainy season now and the skies are overcast. I enjoy the tropics and a good storm. If you are visiting you might find it annoying but we are in Bali and this is part of the deal, just like Hawaii or Florida.

My wife and I stayed in Lovina last time we were in Bali - make sure you get up early and head out with a fisherman to see the dolphins - it’s an amazing experience as they swim around in schools of hundreds..

hey guys, just noticed that the bootsnall.com site is now blog-ified.

is this just temporary? i really liked the ezine style where you had pictures and article lead-ins on the main page.

the new format looks so busy, and is not particularly user friendly to the initiate or the veteran.

really, the site is so dense now, it is just too easy to get lost.

A happy memory of my only stay in Lovina quite a few years ago.
We were in a hotel with karaoke every night.
The manager was a really nice, efficient young guy, but unusually formal for Balinese.
I said to him how about you and me sing “My Way”.
He said he had a terrible voice. I said come on, all the Balinese men can sing.
He was a good sport and got up and made a fool of himself in front of his staff. He was a sort of high squeaky tenor, I’m a sort of base baritone. You never heard anything like it!
My attitude was, well we’re not on the bill, no-one has paid to listen to us, so they can’t ask for their money back, but of course I’m just one more tourist from Australia having fun.
Now that Lovina, like many other parts of Bali, is having it tough, I think about that nice young guy and his friendly staff and hope that things are becoming OK for them.
Best wishes Rex

Bet you’ll feel more relaxed when you get to Amed this time, not having three hours of dodging pedestrians in the dark.

I agree with Paul.

Enjoyed your message, Rex. I hope that nice young guy is fine, also. He probably is if he’s flexible.

Nick, Chris and Sean - have you taken Duncan Campbell’s advice and seen the dolphins? Must be a sight.

What is the story on N. Bali? I was thinking about doing the usual Sanur, Nusa Lembogan, Ubud, thing and then I was thinking about going to Lovina then taking a cheapo bus on to the ferry that takes you to E.Java.

Please share your thoughts!

WAIT, I just asked about Lovina. What is it like now after the most recent events of
Fall 2005? I was there two weeks before this last incedent in Kuta and Jimboran. Nusa Dua all around Club Med was deserted except for a couple of Golf resorts with Japanese. This made some of the locals annoyingly pushy.
