A Cafe that is Par Excellence

A balmy Balinese evening was all Candika needed as an inspiration to go mad shopping on Jl Legian. My grumbling stomach had other ideas and so we stopped for a bit of tucker at a fabulous cafe.

The Etnik Cafe has character, class and cuisine ‘el supremo’. You could easily walk past the place if it wasn’t for the Cafe sign hanging out front. This place is INCREDIBLE!. Straight away I was enchanted with the place, its decor and the atmosphere. I suppose you could classify the Etnik Cafe as a ’boutique restoran’, and there are a lot of these emerging in Bali nowadays.

It’s a small place with only enough room for roughly a dozen tables, but that gives it that cosy effect. A stone floor, and stone pillars supporting a thatched roof gives the cafe an ‘earthy’ feeling. What appealed to me was the long wooden bar resembling one you would find in an old English country pub. It was delightful!.

The menu is as stunning as the cafe itself. It has everything, but more especially it has Home-Made Pizzas. Those I will try on my next visit and that will be very soon!. What appealed to Candika and I the most was the two pages of Balinese dishes. An incredible choice!. Hey, there is even a ‘Kiddies Corner’ section in the menu for the Rugrats!.

It was an all out assault on the seafood in the Balinese section for us. Candika chose the IKAN PANGGANG SAMBAL MALAH (Rp15,000). A grilled tuna steak coated with onion sambal and served with hot chilli peppers. Nasih Putih and a more than ample side salad completed the meal. Candika said two words: “It’s perfect.”

I decided on the IKAN BAKAR SAMBAL MALAH (Rp20,000). A whole fish coated in coconut oil and then slowly grilled to perfection. Before serving, the fish was brushed with mild sambal, and on top there was shredded chilli’s and onions. I was pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of diced pickled onions with the side salad. The accompanying Nasih Putih was a mouth-watering delight also. This was fish cooked to absolute perfection and more than extremely tasty.

I have decided to rate each section with the comments simply because this brilliant cafe truly deserves it.

Atmosphere: The Best - 9.8
Food Quality: Perfection - 9.8
Service: Impeccable - 9.8
Rating: 10

Without a doubt this is the best place I have dined at, and, I would VERY HIGHLY recommend it to anybody coming to Bali. Do yourself a favour and go to the Etnik Cafe for an evening of pleasurable dining at very affordable prices and in an atmosphere that is…par excellence.
