Han Snel’s Retrospective Exhibition: Ubud

Numerous foreign artists have made Bali their home and created their own themes and styles in painting the Balinese and their culture and religion. Bali became an artist enclave for avant-garde artists such as Walter Spies, Rudolf Bonnet, Arie Smit and the most famous being Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur who married Ni Pollock, a renowned legong dancer. The 1920’s saw an artistic flurry on the island and the Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias noted that local paintings served primarily religious or ceremonial functions. Han Snel was another of these foreign artists to grace the shores of Bali. Han Snel was born in 1925 in Scheveningen, in the Netherlands. After his arrival in 1946 with the Dutch military forces he was immediately tasked with fighting Japanese troops and the newly born army of the Republic of Indonesia. As most visiting artists do, Snel immediately fell in love with the island. Like Mayeur, he married a local girl and subsequently applied for Indonesian citizenship and embraced Balinese Hinduism. In Ubud there is an exhibition of Han Snel’s paintings that most visitors who have a penchant for art will like to see.

Barrie where are you now ? Oz OR INdo

Had a bit of a windfall on the gambling front Barrie and not before time. This has caused me to look at finally getting out this contract and outaa London.

London dont change Barrie apart from getting more crowded on the tube. I actually go up to St Andrews every three weeks for a week to the coast and some nice scenery and a bit of green and blue. Im ready to move outaa London very soon and i am looking at my options. Finally get to meet you in person soon Barrie and sample your culinary delights in Indo.

Has Nick got any job plans Barrie ? Is he going to reside in Bali ?

Geez Mark, you still playing poker!. However, I am glad you scored a win. I am in Oz at the moment taking care of some business but will soon be back in Bali.

St Andrews eh. Did you put on the plus-fours and have a round or two?

I haven’t heard from Nick for a while so I can’t tell you much.

Yes Barrie i copped £70,000. I had £2,000 on a golfer @ 35/1 and he one in a play off. I was watching it on Sky and had to endure all sorts. My players opponent had a chance of a winning put but it hit the hole edge and rolled by and he missed the next shot. I was shaking on the playoff more than the player. Not being funny he was playing for about the same amount as me. Good old Jiminez eh!! I owe him a drink but hes got more CalleeE Bobo than me .

The funny thing is BARRIE that i very nearly missed getting the bet on as i just made it 30 seconds before the book closed or i would have just left it. PHEW!!!

Anyway shall i buy 70,000 lottery tickets or wait and back a 10/1 shot for the lot for retirement or just head to BALI and chill for a nice year , cocktails at night, pretty ladies to entertain or or wait for it … donate it to you Barrie to provide funds for going for prine-minister of Indo. You would do a better job eh!

Is it you Barrie that wants to head to South America and travel thru the countries. You could get some tips off Nick when you can catch up with him again. Alls well with him as far as you know eh….the family is still together im hoping.?

Anyway BARRIE Boy enjoy the weekend and i better get my bonce back into this Racing Post and see what i can find.

Mark
