Friday afternoon I rode down the famous surf spot at Uluwatu on the SW end of the Bukit peninsula. Uluwatu is part of the Bali surfing folklore, discovered by guys back in the 70's and known as the secret place. Finally of course everyone figured out where it was and now you can get 40 or 50 people in the water. My ride from Seminyak took about 35 minutes and arriving at the top of the cliff I saw the usual gaggle of women selling Uluwatu t-shirts. At least they offer something slight different from the vendors in Kuta, a selection of t-shirts that are all Uluwatu. If I was a vendor maybe I would try to create a quality fleece line just from Uluwatu, who knows.
Thursday afternoon I wanted to explore somewhere new, so I gathered my sun protection gear together and headed down to the Bukit. The Bypass took me in the direction of Nusa and I took the Uluwatu turn off. Heading up the hill I followed signs for the Bali Cliff Resort, located on the south coast of the Bukit peninsula. The resort is closed for renovations and I rode down the adjacent road towards Green Ball, the southern most surfing beach in Bali.
We're into July, which is normally the dry season. It's dry but somewhat changeable right now. This morning in Seminyak we had clear blue skies, no wind and warm temperatures. This afternoon the wind picked up and some clouds darkened the sky.
Surfing is supposed to be about appreciating the outdoors, being one with nature and letting go of those greedy human tendencies. Well in theory anyway. I know in practice it does not always work out like that. Surfers get upset when someone drops in and steals their wave. This can get quite passionate at times. At least everyone always had the chance to get waves though.
Bingin is located on the western side of the Bukit peninsula between Dreamland and Impossibles. Its is ideal for advanced surfers and has a beautiful wave, a left hander, that works really well during the dry season (June-September) when off shore winds are the norm.
My Pocari and orange was 5,000rp and while sitting, the locals, who had no business at all wandered over to try to sell necklaces to me, asking price 5,000rp. Not buying, but chatting, I got along with them fine and they looked after my helmet while I descended the cement stairs down to Green Ball beach. Overlooking the beach I got a lovely view, the turquoise water leading to the edge of the reef where waves were breaking. I'm no expert but it seemed like high tide descending into low tide, not a single surfer in the water although there were waves. One thing about Bali is that in July the wind picks up, there is a distinct weather change and mornings and nights are cooler. The winds can spoil the surfing if it's too strong.
Saturday morning I did something I never do, I went surfing! Actually the situation was my young brother in-law, Brahma from Semarang Java had his first shot at surfing and I was the teacher!!! Pretty funny eh, me teaching someone to surf. Brahma is leaving today by bus for Semarang, his father arriving 2 days ago. I had said to him before that we should grab a board and try it out. My mother and father in-law wanted to come too so we jumped on 2 motorbikes and zoomed down to Kuta to borrow a surfboard from my mate Palu. His board rental place is on Poppies II and I picked out an 8ft yellow sled for plus a couple of black rash vests. The hike down to Kuta Beach was about 5 minutes and after spending a good 30 seconds showing Brahma what to do we headed off into the surf. He told Ika he was worried in case he couldn't understand my instructions and I made my actions big a clear.
Ika and I went to a bbq last night at a friends place on Jl. Double Six. Jim is a 65 year Chinese American who is very knowledgeable and has something to say on every subject. Also there were some of Aussie surf friends including Stewart and Devo from Byron Bay. They had all been surfing earlier in the day and as anyone who has been surfing can tell you we have had a storm swell that created large unwieldy waves.
After reading the Guide to Bingin Beach, you will see there is plenty of low-budget accommodation on the beach ranging from crash pads to rooms. For those requiring something a little better here is a review of a couple of places located on the cliff-top.
Today was a great day to be in Bali if you love the beach, not necessarily if you are doing beach reviews, but for the folks on holiday it was great.
