Bali Surfing Breaks

Drowned surfer identified

A surfer who went missing, while surfing at Bingin on the Bukit Peninsula, has been found in West Bali. The body of 30 year old Chin Tenh Fung, from Melbourne, was found by fishermen off of Perancak beach (location of macapung, buffalo races), and identified by his relatives.

Surfing: The peak season in Bali

July is the peak season for surfing in Bali. The SW coast, all the way from Medewi to Uluwatu enjoys offshore winds and decent swell. Kuta beach will be busy too, with begining surfers and local Bali boys jostling for position on larger than normal waves.

Padang Padang Bali

Bali has numerous surfing breaks, and as any good surfer will know, the best breaks are down on the Bukit. The Bukit Peninsula is the ‘upside down mushroom’ shaped chunk of land at the southern end of the island. Its mostly reef breaks and this afternoon I went to have a look at Padang Padang.

Bali surf conditions by Palu Waskiw

Palu Waskiw manufactures surfboards here in Bali, and stopped into my house to give me the latest news on surf conditions in Bali. Having surfed most of the breaks from Timor to the Mentawai’s, Palu is a wealth of knowledge, especially for surfers on their first trip to Bali.

Surfing at Uluwatu Bali-part III

jalan_uluwatu082605.jpgThe Bukit is a very dry and arid place, with the blazing sun and proximity to the ocean it reminds me a bit of southern California. At the top of the cliffs at Uluwatu and along Jl. Uluwatu heading back to Jimbaran there are hotels and guest houses. More are being made all the time and there is also an internet cafe. The connection probably stinks, but if you need to stay here for a month and don't want to budge, you can. The Bukit is made of limestone and that limestone is trucked all over Bali for roads and other stuff. You can see new building projects that are under way by the masses of limestone spread all around.

Some nice waves in Bali right now

Checking out the wave conditions in Bali right now, I see this morning we had 2-4ft waves at Kuta & Middle Reef. Winds were ESE-SE by mid-morning. Water temps were 21C and air temps in the upper 20’sC.

New World Surf Record Set in Bali

In a rare spell of drop-in heaven rather than surf break hell, surfers in Bali have set a world record for the most people to ride a single wave.

Kuta Beach Bali

Kuta Beach, the most famous beach in Indonesia. Today Kuta Beach was fairly quiet due to the cloudy weather. Beach vendors know how it works, blue skies equals tourists, wind and rain equal empty beach. With my shades on the waves look almost psychedelic. My glasses are polarizing and the color I see is a dark vibrant green.

Talking with Cody and Jeff in Seminyak Bali

Saturday I went around trying to see what was going on and talk to people. On Jl. Legian close to Bintang I bumped into Cody and Jeff from Oklahoma. These guys are not wasting time, when I saw them both the other day they looked beat and said they were up all night playing college football on their PlayStation.

Surfing at Uluwatu Bali-part II

uluwatu082605v2.jpgMy mixed juice took about 15 minutes to arrive and during that period a couple of vendors tried to persuade me to buy a t-shirt or get a massage. The juice was a thick mixture of banana, papaya and something else and was okay for 8,000rp. This is one of the cool things about Bali for a surfer, you can actually live at the beach and get cheap accommodation, food and drinks and ding repair. No girls here though, for that you have to go to Kuta as the Bukit really isn't a nightlife place…yet. Close to the end of the cliff overlooking the surf is a little bale with locals hanging out. Next to that is a new sign, which says photography here is the sole right of locals now. I ignored it and snapped many photos of the surfing right at the end of the cliff.
