‘What’s the surf like in Bali?’ I hear all you stay at home Aussie surfers yelling. Yesterday down on Kuta Beach the weather conditions were great, not too much wind and sunny. The swell was small though. A more professional report is provided by BaliWaves (these guys surf everyday!). As I’ve said before, the hardest wave I’ve ever surfed was in Kuta. Today, I’d probably head to Nusa Dua, on the eastern Bukit, due to the more favourable wind direction.
Christmas Day passed without incident here in Bali. I spent the day at an internet cafe, while family and friends did their thing. My neighborhood is quiet, many expats from Europe probably staying at home with family.
To get to Green Ball, you head up the hill onto the Bukit, from Bypass Ngurah Rai (heading to Nusa Dua), then at the 4 way intersection (Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, Balangan), turn left towards Nusa Dua. You will see a sign for the Bali Cliff Resort, and the surf beach at Green Ball.
Last year I wrote about the beach / surfing break at Jl. Padma, in Legian. For beginning / intermediate surfers, who are tired of Kuta Beach / Halfway etc., but like the idea of being downtown, Padma is a good option.
Bingin is one of the famous surfing breaks of the Bukit Peninsula. The short, fast barrel is a joyride for those who dare. Exactly waht is out there at Bingin and who is it good for?
Wet season conditions here in Bali, and after strong storms, the eastern coastline is where you’ll find most surfers. Nusa Dua right now is getting offshore winds, whcih are rather too strong. Today’s swell height was predicted at 8ft, with a 20mph wind.
People come to Bali from all over the world, just for the waves. This year we have dry season-like conditions in December! That means the western Bukit breaks, are getting offshore winds as well as less garbage in the water right now.
Morning Toby’s friend Oliie wanted to rent a surfboard, for the duration of his 2 weeks in Bali. Repeating wahtt I had heard before, I told him not to rent from the guys on the beach. All those boards are snapped, and will snap again at some point, in the same place. When that happens, the oowner will demand $300. My friend Palu from Byron Bay, has 3 shops selling boards, as well as a surf school. He also has a selection of used boards for rent of sale.
BaliWaves is a surf website that has been around since 1999. They have started doing their bit to help Balinese orphans, so I thought I’d give them a plug.
Last night I awoke at around 2am to a blast from the past. Torrential rain hammered the roof and its was great to hear. Today my garden nicely watered, the hot sun already. We need more rain and looking at the Bali weather forecast, we are not going to get it.
