Bali What to Do
There’s no limit to the things you can do during your visit. We’ve come up with a few ideas though to get you off to a flying start.
Diving tips for Bali
Talking to an experienced diving instructor in Bali, I learned some tips that I have already passed onto one person. Bali / Lombok has some decent diving but it is not earth-shaking, like some of the spots in Eastern Indonesia. For someone who is looking to travel around Bali a bit and do some diving, here’s a plan.

Learning to dive in Gili Trawangan Lombok
Gili Trawangan offers a white sand island, surrounded by turquiose water. There are no cars or motorbikes, no police, no nightclubs, but there are many restaurants, many showing evening movies and some having live music. Some of Bali’s most famous restaurants have branches there including Ryoshi and The Beach House. In all Gili Trawangan offers a good place to get a taste of diving in Indonesia, before moving onto more challenging sites.

Chocky’s Place: Bingin Bali
As the dry season draws closer, surfers will be planning their trips to Bali. June/ July sees clear skies, cooler weather, and an offshore wind on the western Bukit, which is ideal for surfing.

Surfing in Bali
‘What’s the surf like in Bali?’ I hear all you stay at home Aussie surfers yelling. Yesterday down on Kuta Beach the weather conditions were great, not too much wind and sunny. The swell was small though. A more professional report is provided by BaliWaves (these guys surf everyday!). As I’ve said before, the hardest wave I’ve ever surfed was in Kuta. Today, I’d probably head to Nusa Dua, on the eastern Bukit, due to the more favourable wind direction.

Komodo Diving: Liveaboards in Indonesia
Last night I chatted to an Australian couple who have been diving in Indonesia recently. Everyone has their favourite places and experiences with dive sites, operators and supporting infrastructure.

Big waves expected in Bali / Java
According to the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, Bali and Java can expect big waves for the next few days. The last couple of days have been extremely windy, with sand blowing across Jl Seminyak! This news will excite surfers, even though the wind may not make it the perfect conditions. Here’s more from the Jakarta Post.

Surfing going up market
A recent article in World Hum, talks about how the stock has risen in the surfing industry. Years ago surfing was reserved for beach bums and guys with too much time on their hands. With the advent of companies such as Billabong, Quiksilver and so forth, people who have never surfed, now wear surf clothing. You can find surf shops in London!

New surf website in Bali
This afternoon I met up with Palu, the Aussie guy from Byron who has a surfboard factory on the Bukit. Palu specializes in big yellow sleds, for learners. If you want to wipe out half a dozen Kuta Cowboys in one go, borrow one of Palu’s boards, they are surfing’s equivalent to the Humvee.

Bali Sling Shot: Catapult ride in Tuban
Package tourism can get boring, even in Bali. Jl. Kartika Plaza in Tuban, is wall to wall package tourism, including resorts hotels, family restaurants and Waterbom Park. If you are staying on Kartika Plaza and need to flush your system out with some adrenaline, there is no place better than Bali Sling Shot. This vicious looking contraption, allows to willing subjects, to be locked inside a metal ball, and catapulted into the air, bouncing and spinning wildly for a minute or 2. Today I passed by and asked the guy in charge if I could do it, with only one of the chords attached. The random nature of the swing would add even more excitement.
