Bali What to Do

There’s no limit to the things you can do during your visit. We’ve come up with a few ideas though to get you off to a flying start.

Interview with Ebong from Magic Wave

Magic Wave is a surf community newspaper that I published in Bali. Their office is located on the 2nd floor of the now deserted, Legian Arcade. This afternoon I stopped in their to talk with Ebong, a friend and surfer, who is now one of the main men at Magic Wave. Here’s what Ebong had to say. Ebong has such terrific pronounciation. I wish I could roll my ‘R’s like that.

Surfing’s Greatest Misadventures

Surfing editor Paul Diamond contacted me about a book called Surfing’s Greatest Misadventures. Indonesia seems the perfect place to gather those kind of stories, whether the mishaps be scraping yourself on a remote reef or getting hooked up with a Javanese party girl. Indonesia and surfing in Indonesia is made for adventure.

Kuta Beach Bali

Kuta Beach, the most famous beach in Indonesia. Today Kuta Beach was fairly quiet due to the cloudy weather. Beach vendors know how it works, blue skies equals tourists, wind and rain equal empty beach. With my shades on the waves look almost psychedelic. My glasses are polarizing and the color I see is a dark vibrant green.

Bali surf conditions

This afternoon I interviewed Aussie surfboard maker Palu at his new shop on Poppies II in Kuta. The shop is opposite Taman Sari restaurant and features some of his new boards.

Padang Padang Bali

Bali has numerous surfing breaks, and as any good surfer will know, the best breaks are down on the Bukit. The Bukit Peninsula is the ‘upside down mushroom’ shaped chunk of land at the southern end of the island. Its mostly reef breaks and this afternoon I went to have a look at Padang Padang.

Trade winds changing in Bali

Trade winds are changing in Bali meaning the offshores winds, which are desirable for a good waves are here. Offshore winds hold up the face of the waves slightly longer and blow pesky clouds out to sea.

Stussy: Kuta Bali

Stussy shop is a surfer oriented shop, located at the bottom end of Jl. Legian in Kuta. They don’t sell surf boards and leg ropes, just casual wear and accessories. In the surfing industry all the real margins are in accessories anyway. Who wants the agro of making a surfboard with just a $100 profit margin, when you can knock out shirt and shorts at a factory in Denpasar, for next to nothing and sell them for $30.

Balinese artwork on surfboards in Kuta Bali

Surfboards are made from a foam ‘blank’ that is a roughly shaped white piece of material. Boards made here in Bali use imported blanks from Australia and all the people making board here are foreigners. There is always a shortage of blanks and it is very hard for Balinese to obtain blanks themselves. The blank is then cut with a saw, filed, wrapped in fiber glass, then covered with resin to give that smooth seal.
