Sukerti’s Restaurant Canggu

Canggu is fast developing and one of the latest restaurants is Sukerti’s Restaurant. Located at the beach end of a long village street in Pantai Berawa, Sukerti’s is modern looking and serves interesting food.

Pili Pili Warung in Seminyak Bali

Bali has a million and 1 food places, that are tucked away down narrow streets. This lunchtime I rode down Jl. Mertanadi in Seminyak and spotted a new place. Jl. Mertanadi runs alongside the jail and is a virtual ‘furniture alley’.

Traditional snacks in Seminyak Bali

This afternoon while walking on Jl. Seminyak, I stopped to observe a small group of locals, descending on a snack vendor. These charachters are found all over Bali, carting a round tub of gear with them, and supplying shop workers with little snacks. This crowd were digging through bags of cut papaya and little bags of anchovie with peanuts.

Bintang: The beer of Indonesia

Every red blooded man who comes to Bali (plus a few Sheila’s), likes to get hold of a cold Bintang beer. Usually it happen about 5 minutes after checking into the hotel and 10 minutes before jumping into the pool. Bintang is a pilsner (clear, bottom fermented lager beer), which makes it ideal for those steamy Bali afternoons (some Seminyak expats like it on steamy Bali mornings, but that’s another matter).

Interesting pantry in Seminyak Bali

pantry baliBeing married to an Indonesian, means ther pantry gets a mixture of items, that often have nothing in common. Having friends from around the world who travel, also adds to the stuff in my pantry. Taking a photo this afternoon, the line up was interesting. We had Belizean Pepper Sauce, Kee’s Dark Soy Sauce (Singapore), Green Mole (Mexico), Kecap Manis (Indonesia), Habanero Pepper Mash (Belize), Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Italy).

Nasi Padang: A good cheap alternative in Bali

Nasi padang is a version of Indonesian fodo that originates in Sumatra. All over the Kuta/ Legian / Seminyak area are padang places, selling a version of the same thing. Basically you get a plate of nasi putih (steamed, white rice) and select from plates of food in the window. A curtain protects the food from flies, and locals have learned, that burning a candle helps to keep them away.

Menu blunders in Bali

Bali warungs and restaurants often attempt the impossible, to get chefs and staff, who have never eaten foreign food, to cook and serve an extensive menu, featuring several foreign cuisines. Once in a while this leads to surprising results. Sometimes he results are not that surprising after reading the menu.

Popular Dishes in Bali: Nasi Goreng

Nasi goreng (fried rice) is a dish popular, not only in Bali, but all over Asia. Its not my favourite by any means, but there are times when nasi goreng is the best option.
