Bali Books & Guides

The Natural Guide to Bali

One of the best guide books to Bali is ‘The Natural Guide to Bali’. I have read other Bali guides and today received a copy through the mail. Flicking through it, I can see The Natural Guide to Bali has a ton of cool photos, plenty of hotel contact info and the inside scoop on less traveled parts of Bali.

Legian & Seminyak: Looking back to 1991

Having lived here in Seminyak for over 2 years I am familiar with the way it was and the way its developing. Can you imagine someone who last came in 1991 returning and expressing their opinion? Here is an excerpt from Bill Dalton's Indonesia Handbook that was written in 1991. He talks about Legian and Seminyak.

Bali books at Bintang in Seminyak Bali

This morning while in Bintang supermarket in Seminyak, buying fruit for Ika, I stopped to browse the book section Bintang has a nice little collection of books on Bali and they cover a wide range of subjects. One of the books I looked at was all about 'Bali Chic' the tropical fantasy style that incorporates elements from all over Indonesia. The book, Bali: A Travelers Companion, features stunning photos of some of the 'not to miss' luxury places on the island, including restaurants, such as Ku De Ta and hotels, such as the Alila Manggis.

Phaic Tan: Sunstroke on a shoestring

Chris brought me a book from England that has had me in stitches recently. The title of the book is Phaic Tan and is a spoof on a guide book to SE Asia. Phaic Tan, the country doesn't exist, but the commentary could almost be cut and pasted out of a guide to Bali or Thailand. The over-view describes the book as follows:

Barrie spreads his web wings in Perth Australia

Barrie has been a constant contributor to Baliblog since the start in 2003 and as well as doing the Word of the Day ( as I am not so fluent and some of my friends give me credit for) has many admirers. Barrie has lived for over 10 years in Yogyakarta, the cultural center of Java and has a ton of knowledge about Indonesia in general.

He has a couple of his own sites which Baliblog readers will enjoy. Firstly, Wombat Wanderings which has been online for while, and the more recent Planet Mole. Barrie will also be bringing out a video series 'Adventures in the Gene Pool' which is still waiting for censors to clear an 18 rating.

Mama Kuma: One Woman, Two Cultures at the Ubud Writers Festival

While browsing the Bali Advertiser today I came across a familiar face. It was Debbie Carlyon, wife of a good friend of mine from Australia. Debbie is an award winning author whose book 'Mama Kuma: One Woman, Two Cultures' will be featured at the Ubud Writer & Readers Festival in October.

Corby case brings the 'Kato's out of the woodwork

Every high profile case needs it eccentric characters. The OJ Simpson trial had Kato Cailin, the Corby trail has her lead attorney, Hotman Paris Hutapea from Jakarta. Corby's Perth legal advisors smelt a rat as soon as they got here with the Bali legal team suggesting the best way for a result was to get $500,000 to the appeal judges. They were fired, then re-hired and now Hotman has come on board.
