Bahasa Bali: Balinese
Most people in Bali speak Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and many speak some English. All Balinese however, speak Balinese (Bahasa Bali). In villages and towns across the island, kids are brought up in the family home speaking Balinese, later learing Indonesian, the national language in school, or while mixing with friends. It is still possible to meet older Balinese people, who do not speak Indonesian.

Secret Garden makes LP’s SE Asia
Lonely Planet has such a reputation that many small business owners in Bali feel its make or break to get included. I reckon providing a good service is more important than pleasing LP, but being recommended doesn’t hurt. I know the owner of Secret Garden, on Poppies Lane I in Kuta, and he was not happy when LP’s guide to Bali ommitted everyone but Poppies Restaurant on that street.

A Bilingual Edition of Contemporary Balinese Poems

Bali Sacred & Secret: Photojournal by Gill Marais
There’s a new book out, one that gets me excited. It’s a photojournal by S. African born photographer Gill Marais. Gill spent 17 years patiently observing Balinese life and culture, capturing some fine images with her trusty Leica. I reckon she would be a very interesting and cool person to meet and will browse through her book if I get the chance.

Affordable accommodation in Ubud Bali
Bali has 20,000 hotel and guest house rooms, which vary from the very basic ‘losman’ (simple fan room with cold water), to villas to the ‘Best Hotel in the World’ (Four Seasons Sayan). In each area you have incredible choice and no one has visited every property. a while ago I visited guest houses and budget hotels in 3 parts of Ubud, Jl. Hanoman, Jl. Kajeng and Jl. Penestenan. LP’s new SE Asia guide lists their choices for accomodation in the Ubud area.
