Shopping in Bali: World famous bargains

Casual tourists to Bali stroll around the markets in Kuta, Sukawati and Ubud checking out the nick-nacks and deciding what to buy for Auntie Flo. Bali has for decades supplied cheap gifts that can by bought for a couple of dollars. There is a newer side to the Bali shopping scene that has gained worldwide attention, luxury interior goods.

Exporting furniture from Bali: A success story

How many wanderers have arrived in Bali, and ended up shipping home furniture in the hope of making a business for themselves? Its not all sunshine and light and assuming you get hold of decent goods for an okay price, you still have to get them home without damage, and sell them. Lately it seems I’ve been hearing people say, ‘I’m glad he/she is doing well, he/she struggled for SO long.’

Indonesian furniture set to take of in India

Indonesian made furniture is set to take India by storm. The reasons for this are the selection of materials used from teak, bamboo, rattan and others. The second reason is Indonesia has a wealth of skilled carpenters and craftsmen (and women).

Buying a bale from Bali

The climate in Bali is hot and humid. In the days before AC, locals would wear minimal clothing and spend time sitting under the bale. Bale’s are the square or rectangular structures, consisting of a platform, with 4 to 8 palm poles supporting a grass roof.

Teak: One of Indonesia's natural wonders

As anyone looking for Indonesian antiques or quality furniture will be aware that jati (teakwood) is the wood to go for and is in short supply. A friend of mine bought a tree in Lombok last year and had to fly over there to supervise a guy cutting it.

Advertising your Bali stuff on the internet

The ‘information super highway’ is has grown exponentially in the last year, going from 10 million websites, to over 100 million. Search the web for ‘Bali’ and you’ll get 150 geezers flogging villas, plus everyone and his brother writing a ‘holiday blog’ about shopping in Kuta.

Is it possible to use the internet to sell good made / bought in Bali?

Alami’s Furniture & Art Shop: Jl. Kunti Seminyak

Alami’s Furniture & Art Shop isn’t one of the fancier places on Jl. Kunti, in Seminyak. Its open to the street, the furniture is sitting there without decoration and the staff seems half interested. The thing I like about Alami’s is they have some decent western style furniture. I looked at a sofa (2,350,000rp) and a big bed (2,850,000rp) which looked cool.

Interviews in Seminyak Bali

Wednesday afternoon I grabbed my new umbrella, iRiver and camera and headed out into the rain to do some interviews. My iRiver can play mp3’s and record from a built in mic. Its a handy little gadget and I am impressed by the sound quality, particularly compared to my old hand held tape player. After visiting several businesses on Jl. Dhyana Pura and Jl. Seminyak and talking with the staff and owners, I headed up to Eat Street (Jl. Oberoi). My interviews will be online as soon as I have a way to upload them and I found it quite easy to get people to talk.

Apo Kayan: Furniture, Art & Antiques in Seminyak Bali

furniture090705.jpgSeminyak and Kerobokan are full of furniture places and on a walk down Jl. Seminyak this afternoon I checked one called Apo Kayan. Located directly across the street from Pantarei restaurant, the shop has some massive pieces including benches, couches, carved wall decorations and big wooden pots. Its like land of the giants and looking around I thought the kind of person buying this stuff must either have a hotel or a a very large house. Its cool though, you won't find this stuff in a catalog. I asked the lady in charge Yohan Wijaya, where she got her inventory from. She told me all over the country, Java, Sulawesi, all over. Her business card says 'Furniture, Art & Antiques' and that's the deal. A cool place to browse even if you aren't going to buy.
