Checking out Gianyar Bali part III: Endek factory

endek071805v2.jpgThe Cap Cili Endek weaving factory is located close to the big statues on Jl. Ciung Wenara. Endek is a type of ikat, one of the traditional cloths from Indonesia. Cap Cili isn't a fancy place and you have to look for the sign. The shop is located at the front of the building and features batiks, ikats and endeks, some made right here, others from Java. The staff told me the place was open 9am-5pm. Out back was the factory, which consisted of 3 people dyeing the threads and 4 more people spinning and weaving, on large wooden machines. They chatted amongst themselves and they effortlessly performed the same movement over and over. I chatted with a couple of the ladies and they of course wanted to know where I was from, if I was married, where my wife was from and how many kids we have. I could save time by printing out a pamphlet and passing it around, but it is nice to chat.

Jl. Double Six in Legian Bali

street062005.jpgOne of the busiest streets in Legian / Seminyak is Jl. Double Six. It run perpendicular to the beach and connects Jl. Legian to Jl. Arjuna. The narrow winding street is lined with shops selling a never-ending selection of sarongs, flashy / holiday style clothes, accessories, hats and handicrafts. During the daytime the street is very busy with traffic, all pushing its way through and causing blockages. The traffic problem has been helped greatly by the new regulation that forces traffic to exit this dead-end street via Jl. Padma Utara. Motorbikes can still drive both ways. Double Six, which actually Jl. Arjuna, was unofficially re-named after the large nightclub that occupies a beach side spot at the end of the road.

Meeting Debbie (DD Legs) in Kuta Bali

deb070905.jpgSaturday afternoon I was in Internet Outpost and bumped into Debbie (DDLegs) from Los Angeles. Debbie has been over to Bali many times and this is the 3rd time I have seen her. She is an inspiring lady and full of energy. Last time I saw her a few months ago she was frazzled. Over here getting a batch of clothes made for sale back in California. She told me she was waiting for some financing to arrive and was having to take big risks, it was 'make or break'. Today when I saw her she grinned and told me her life had never been better. The skirts she had made in Bali for an investment of a few thousand dollars turned into 5 figures and more in a couple of weeks and she was completely amazed at the success she was having.
