Getting Anil out of bed and down to the beach was a success as far I as I am concerned. None of us had a rash vest or even a block of wax, but you know sometimes the best way to learn is to get in there with very basic equipment and figure it out.
The Bukit is a very dry and arid place, with the blazing sun and proximity to the ocean it reminds me a bit of southern California. At the top of the cliffs at Uluwatu and along Jl. Uluwatu heading back to Jimbaran there are hotels and guest houses. More are being made all the time and there is also an internet cafe. The connection probably stinks, but if you need to stay here for a month and don't want to budge, you can. The Bukit is made of limestone and that limestone is trucked all over Bali for roads and other stuff. You can see new building projects that are under way by the masses of limestone spread all around.
Saturday morning I did something I never do, I went surfing! Actually the situation was my young brother in-law, Brahma from Semarang Java had his first shot at surfing and I was the teacher!!! Pretty funny eh, me teaching someone to surf. Brahma is leaving today by bus for Semarang, his father arriving 2 days ago. I had said to him before that we should grab a board and try it out. My mother and father in-law wanted to come too so we jumped on 2 motorbikes and zoomed down to Kuta to borrow a surfboard from my mate Palu. His board rental place is on Poppies II and I picked out an 8ft yellow sled for plus a couple of black rash vests. The hike down to Kuta Beach was about 5 minutes and after spending a good 30 seconds showing Brahma what to do we headed off into the surf. He told Ika he was worried in case he couldn't understand my instructions and I made my actions big a clear.
Blue Ocean Bar on Jl. Arjuna has recently had a made over and is a cool place for a drink or snack. Located next to Bennys, the sunset favorite, Blue Ocean enjoys a good view of the beach and the waves. The patio area can seat around 100 people and there are sunshades to help stop the tropical rays from scorching you. The area under the roof can seat another 100 people. Staff here have recently been hired and are attentive.
Kuta Beach Bali is a mixing place for many Bali visitors. The size of the beach and the proximity to guesthouses and hotels means Kuta Beach is within easy reach. Just the other day I strolled down to the beach at sunset to checkout what was going on and the beach was pretty packed. Waves were pumping and the water was full of monkeys all dropping in and cutting each others nuts off. For novice surfers Kuta Beach offers an excellent starting point because it is handy, sandy and waves break rather flat so you can always get onto something.
Bali means many things to many people and surfing is a big part of the picture for many people. Chris told me that his mate Anil from England won't lift a finger unless it has a pool cue or a drink attached, his favourite activity is sleeping. I suggested we all go down to Kuta Beach and give surfing a go, not that I know how, but its fun to try.
Canggu is a place that most surfers will know about, with its larger than Kuta swells, sandy beach and not much else. Canggu however is becoming better known in tourist and expat circles and living in Seminyak I can feel the way things are moving. Located 20 minutes north of Seminyak along the coast Canggu has rice fields that come right down to the beach. One of the special sights I like watching the water trickle down from the last paddy wall onto the beach, completing its long journey from the mountains to the sea. It's quite unique. A friend of mine from the US who has lived in Bali for 14 years moved out to Canggu 5 years ago and told me back then there were not many villas. As the amount of villas increased he told me, "I knew I was no longer the only one out there, but at least I could look over the wall of my bathroom and see just sawah (rice fields). It would seem like I was the only one there. Then one day someone built a villa right in the middle."
Tourists flock to Kuta Beach and in late afternoon the place is packed with Indonesian school groups, camera happy Asian tourists, locals trying to sell anything they can think of and Europeans competing with the whiteness of the sand. I walked down from Kuta Beach and Poppies II towards the airport and the beach gets a lot quieter. Kuta Bay curves towards the Discovery Shopping Mall and at low tide the beach seems quite large. Low tide is a perfect time for a beach run or walk as the gradient tapers to something approaching flat. Continuing around the corner from the Discovery Mall I saw fishing boats that moored close to shore. These are all for hire and are actually good to take for an hours snorkeling. Many surfers use them to get to Kuta Reef and get dropped of for a couple of hours before the boat returns and picks them up. Hopefully.
Blue Ocean Beach is located at the end of Jl. Arjuna (Double Six) and is a favorite with tourists and expats alike. Easily reached from Kuta via a 10 minute ride up Jl. Pantai Kuta and Jl. Legian, Blue ocean Beach can be a cool place for a lazy afternoon. The sand is not quite the same shade of white as in Kuta. In fact it is a sandy brown color. The attraction is the low key level of beach vendors compared to the high-intensity of the vendors in Kuta. You can actually enjoy sitting on the beach, or under a shade without getting pestered the whole time.
