Tumpek Wayang
Today in Bali is Tumpek Wayang, also known as Tumpek Ringgit. It is a Kajeng Kaliwon and is of particular importance. Some areas of Bali use this day to make offerings to musical instruments and dance equipment. This day is also important for the shadow puppets, Wayang Kulit. Many families have inherited puppets from an ancestor who performed them, a dalang. All dalangs have full sets of puppets. The puppets are taken from the box, placed in a position just as if an actual performance were being given and blessed by the owner. A Dalang …

Two Exhibitions in Bali
Being a great lover of the arts and forever in galleries and museums, it is the art of photography that is my passion. Travel anywhere in Bali and the photographic opportunities are endless. The same can be said for the rest of Indonesia and in fact, South-East Asia. Currently there are two excellent photographic exhibitions in Bali. Here’s more from Bali Discovery.

Christmas Day in Bali
Christmas day in Bali was a wet one, with torrential rain soaking everyone who ventured out. My gang (alley) is partially flooded as was part of the garden. The atmosphere here in Seminyak was a kind confusing mixture of ’special event’ and ‘damp reality’.

Selamat Hari Raya Idul Adha
Selamat hari raya to all people of Muslim faith. Today is December 20th 2007, and the big day (hari raya) is Idul Adha, the day that honors Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son for Allah. Fortunately Allah was merciful and allowed Ibrahim to substitute a goat for his son. On this day in Indonesia, many Muslims celebrate by eating sate kambing (goat satay).

Bali Arts Festival Dates
The one festival and time of the year I enjoy is the Bali Arts Festival. A potpourri of drama, dance and culture combine to make it one of the most enjoyable attractions of the year. Twenty provinces from Indonesia will join the festival this year by presenting their cultural arts and handicrafts as well as twelve arts troupe from eight countries. The international events would include a world `wayang` (puppet shadow) festival and an ASEAN ethnic music festival. The theme this year will be “Citta Wretti Nirodha” or a self-controlling behaviour toward the balance and …

Christmas Eve in Bali
Christmas Eve in Bali has crept up on us again. Living here full time one is aware Christmas is coming when the sales staff in shops and restaurants start wearing Santa hats in 90 degree heat.

Balinese ceremonial schedule for December 2007
Bali is referred to as the Island of the Gods because the Balinese people pay such attention to their Agama Hindu religion. With impressive temples such as Pura Besakih and Pura Ulun Danu Batur, tourists have a great opportunity to visit a pura (Balinese temple) to learn about the history and architecture. Temples really come alive though during an upacara (ceremony). Local temple ceremonies can be some of the best to see as it is unlikely other tourists will be around and the whole scene is generally quite relaxed.

Bali getting ready for end of Ramadan deluge
We are a few days from the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan. Ramadan seems to get earlier each year because the Muslim calendar has 11 months. When Ramadan end there is a week of celebration in Indonesia known as Idul Fitri, with people returning to their family. Its Indonesia’s Thanksgiving, except motorbikes, cars and trains replace airlines. Foreigners who are trying to book bus or plane tickets in Indonesia around Idul Fitri are in for a nasty shock, the prices have gone through the roof. Also single western men in Bali, looking for love in all the wrong places will be disappointed, as the cash-laden party-girls also go home for a week or two. The thing most of us in Bali notice is the deluge of tourists from Java. All major roads in the Kuta area will be choked with extra cars, driving by people who don’t know the rules. They’ll try to squeeze their SUV 2 abreast down a road wide enough for 1 car and 1 motorbike, its a disaster. Kuta beach will become a playground for family groups from Java, all nice people, but man do we love it when Idul Fitri is over. Here’s more from the Jakarta Post
