Bali has many traditional dances, one of which is the Wayang Wong. Wayang Wong is a dramatic dance drama and is taken form the Indian epic, the Ramayana. The word ‘wayang’ means shadow puppet, and the Ramayana used to be performed as a shadow puppet theatre. The word ‘wong’ means people, and with a simplification of the dialogue and story, the Wayang Wong was born.

The Bali Arts Festival is currently underway in Denpasar and attracting visitors and participating foreign dancers alike. One of the dances showcased is that of the Ramayana as part of International Ramayana Festival, a cultural gathering held in conjunction with the 28th Bali Arts Festival.
In Yogyakarta in Central Java this dance is a mammoth spectacular set against the backdrop of the Prambanan Hindu Complex and held every October. However, the Ramayana performances at the Bali Arts Festival involved Ramayana troupes from Thailand, Cambodia, India, Singapore and the United States.

Yesterday Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially opened the 28th Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar. There are 15 foreign countries participating in this annual event known as PKB - Pesta Kesenian Bali.

The 4th Kuta Karnival is back on again after it was cancelled in late February. Local businessmen have pushed for the Karnival to proceed despite recent incidents on the island that caused tourist numbers to drop.
