Bali is a mecca for arts and handicrafts. The way they do it over here, is that a particular village will specialize in one thing. I guess this started in the good old Bali tradition of ‘my neighbor is having success doing this, so I should copy’. One expat I talked to said it doesn’t occur to locals to sell other stuff. For example, in Celuk, the silversmith village, they don’t sell woodcarvings. But imagine if you were the only one selling woodcarvings, you might actually sell some!
Tenganan Dauh Tukad is the watered down version of Tenganan proper. People were friendly, but I was escorted to the ‘donation booth’ after arriving. I gave 10,000rp, take it or shake it. Locals were sporting traditional clothing, because of the birth of the new temple.

The Bali museum in Denpasar was built in 1931 and it is unique collection of buildings and art. Designed by architect P.J. Moojen, the exterior walls, courtyards and gates, are designed in the style of a Denpasar royal palace.

Balinese artist, Kadek Ardita, showed me his family’s collection of Geringsings. He also sells single ikats, batiks and cloths made from kashmir-like material. His art is actually engraving.
Also known as Museum Seni Lukis Klasik Bali, the Gunarsa Museum of Classical & Modern Art, is located in the town of Klungkung. The museum was founded by Dr. Nyoman Gunarsa, who was himself a Balinese painter.
German artist Walter Spies was born September 15, 1895 in Moscow. From an early age he had an interest in the arts, including painting, dance and music. Attending university in Dresden, gave Spies the opportunity to interact with musicians and composers, such as Paul Hindemith and Arthur Schnabel, and artists such as Oskar Kokoschka and Otto Dix.
