Bali Profile of an expat
Bali Expat Forum: Information from people who live in Bali
Living on Bali is a dream for many people, but what is it really like for a foreigner? As Bruce Lee would say ‘if you want to learn how to throw punches, ask a man who does it for a living’ (a boxer).

Interview with Darvis: Painted photographs in Bali
Darvis is a one of a kind person I have run into, while living in Bali. Maybe Bali attracts unique people, or maybe they get that way after living here for a while. Whatever, this afternoon I talked to Darvis about his life in Bali, his painted photographs, and his company, AsiaImages.

Interview with Patrice from France
Bali expats come in all shapes and sizes. On this day in 2003 I interviewed a French expat named Patrice at his home in Sanur. Patrice was a unique fellow indeed, opinionated, well traveled and an oddball.

Meeting Chantelle and Moman from Rum Jungle Bali
One of the first bars in Legian was Rum Jungle. One of the streets that connects Jl. Legian with the beach is informally known as Rum Jungle Rd. This afternoon I talked with the owners, Chantelle from Switzerland and Moman from Indonesia. Rum jungle opened 16 years ago when you literally had to go through jungle to get there. I know in 1993 I stayed in an expats house in the area with double thick mosquito nets, huge Dutch furniture, like something out of a Humphrey Bogart movie.

Interview with surfboard manufacturer Palu Waskiw
Australian expat Palu Waskiw has been coming to Bali for over 20 years. Anyone who spent time on Kuta Beach will have seen one of his signature learner boards, which are bright yellow. Palu started with a single shop located on Poppies Lane II, close to Gang Mangga in Kuta. H now has a shop close to the junction on Jl. Benesari where G-Land used to be located, and another on Jl. Uluwatu at Dreamland.

Ted from Sanda Butik Villas
The owner of Sanda Butik (not Bukit!) Villas in the highlands of Tabanan, talked to me about who comes to stay at his hotel and how you would book. I tell you when I first came to Sanda in 2003, I was kind of amazed that a place like this existed, as the surrounding area is either Balinese villages, or forested / farmed land. Ted is a talker, and a very interesting one. Retired, the hotel is part house and part business.

People in Balinese history - Bob Koke & Louise Garret
Bob Koke, a young photographer from Hollywood, and Louise Garret, his future wife, came to Bali in the Dutch East Indies in 1936, to spend a few weeks painting and taking photographs. Very soon after arriving they decided to open a small hotel on ‘the most beautiful beach in the world’, Kuta Beach. Leasing the land from locals, Bob and Louise built the Kuta Beach Hotel, which was very basic, and somewhat cut off from the areas of Bali’s fledgling tourist industry.

Meeting Yogya dancers at Galaxy in Seminyak
Last night I went down to Jl. Dhyana Pura for a drink and to check out the scene. Thursdays nights are quiet and I sat in Galaxy sipping a Bintang. Every Thursday night at 11pm they have fire dancers (2 guys in silver outfits twirling strings with flaming material on the end. It was pretty good, and I’m sure for those 2 guys, 10 minutes of that beats working in the rice paddy all day.
