Raising kids in Bali

Raising kids is something that most of us aren’t trained for but have to deal with sooner or later. I actually enjoy it, partly because I know it won’t last forever and partly because it brings a refreshing reality to things.

Buying land in Bali: Watch your step

Buying land in Bali and building your ‘dream house’ is something many people consider. During my time living in Bali I’ve seen some quite dramatic situations where foreigners went diving in and got / almost got burned. Indonesian law states that only Indonesian citizens can own land in Indonesia, but many property companies claim to be able to sell you ‘freehold’ land. What is the validity of these claims and how will it stand up down the line? An excellent article in BaliDiscovery warns foreigners to tread carefully when dealing with land sales.

Trying out a new ISP in Kuta Bali

Getting online in Bali has always has its challenges, ranging from slow connections to power outages. Things have gotten better though and the range of solutions has increased. Currently I’m using a service with an antenna on my roof, which connects my laptop to the receiver on AJ Hackett’s bungy tower by microwave transmission. The service is good but the prices are a bit high, around $120 every 6 weeks.

Buying a new cell phone in Singapore

Today I took my friend Fauzi’s advice and went to Toa Payoh to look at cell phones. I’m not a gadget person and don’t care about ringtones, video clips or playing games. For me its purely a device to save time.

Sunday bloody Sunday in Semiyak Bali

Sunday evening in Bali and here is what this expat did today. Ika wants to learn to drive a car, so I spent an hour trying to locate a cheap rental, that we could take down to Serangan Island (plenty of open space) and get her started. Seminyak car rental places were all sold out, due to healthy tourist numbers and the fact it was Sunday. One guy wanted 150,000rp for a Suzuki Katana!

Update on XL ISP in Kuta Bali

My visit to the XL building recently was a rather frustrating affair, getting my machine & cell phone set up with their system, only to hear I needed a land line. After all the good advice from Baliblog readers I decided to pay another visit to sort this ISP issue out.

Nokia Navigator: Genuine article or rip off?

My last trip to Singapore included picking up a Nokia Navigator at one of the many phone shops in Toa Payoh. Here’s an update on how things are going with that device here in Bali.

Bali vs. Jakarta expats

A Singapore visa run means running into other expats living in Indonesia. Often I see familiar faces on the plane or even in Singapore, other times I’ll run into expats living in other parts of Indonesia. Jakarta exapts are easy to spot, their lifestyle quite different from those living in Bali.

XL ISP in Kuta Bali

Bali has many options for home internet connection these days. The old dial up has pretty much gone out of the window, for most people with Telkom introducing DSL several months ago. Today I visited XL located on the Sunset Rd in Kuta.

Indonesian relatives heading back to Java

Visits from relatives are always something to look forward to and my relatives from Java have been here for a few weeks. They are heading back to Semarang in Central Java today, content after having one road trip to Lovina / Kintamani and plenty of cheap meals from the A-list of Indonesian warungs (Warung Nikmat in Tuban, Warung Murah in Legian, Warung, Kolega in Kerobokan). Prices were always foremost in their minds, my father -in-law commenting that in Semarang ayam goreng (fried chicken) is 2,000rp, here in Bali its 9,000rp.
