Bali Marriage in Bali
Ayu: Friend of Ika’s
Ika has many friend from all over Indonesia. She met them in the various jobs she did in the Kuta area. This morning her friend Ayu stopped by. Ayu is from Kalimantan and has that Kalimantan face. I met Ayu in the gym where I met Ika. Having friends stop by and chatting about life, kids and husbands, particularly husbands, is a popular way of passing the time out here.

Sharing the OJ in Seminyak Bali
Coming home from the gym today I staggered in the front door after a great workout. Ika and Jevon were on the floor and I offered he a glass of my pasteurized OJ. Snapping a photo and showing it of her she laughed “Like Ethiopia.” she said. Maybe that meant they looked like a couple of refuges. Being 42 and married with a son has made me realize what is the most important thing in life. Air.

Mixed marriage can be a legal minefield in Indonesia
Indonesia has some weird rules for sure, and they get weirder when an Indonesian citizen marries a foreigner. Since the Suharto days the government has had a control complex regarding locals and major distrust of foreigners. Maybe this is why foreigners living in Indonesia are treated like long term tourists, rather than permanent residents. One of the strangest rules regards the children of an Indonesian woman who marries a foriegner. The governrnent considers them also foreigners and they have to jump through hoops if they want to live here.

Meeting Angie and Allie in Seminyak Bali
Long term readers of Baliblog will remember Angie Chambers from Balarat Australia and her side-kick Allie. They are partners in Bali Paradise Weddings and are here once again to arrange a few weddings. Angie has gone through the whole Duluxe chart of hair colors since I have known her and today she sported natural blond. Angie and Ellie made quite an impression when they arrived at my house today, dressed in their elegant black outfits. I felt quite under-dressed in my boards shorts and Nike shirt.

Transnational marriage a problem in Indonesia
Since the Suharto days Indonesia has had a mistrust of foreigners. We make the government nervous, because they can’t control us. We have access to the foreign press, foreign consulates and often speak up on issues that Indonesian citizens won’t.

Saying goodbye to Ibu in Seminyak Bali
Saturday at 2pm my mother in law, who I refer to as Ibu (mother) took off for Semarang in Central Java. Ibu has been staying at our house for about a month now and I know Ika enjoyed her company. Our ayam / ikan bakar last night was a farewell dinner and she went home loaded with small gifts. During the WebmasterWorld conference in Las Vegas, we were all given red and black nylon shopping bags, containing junk like pens, a brochure and other crap. Most people tossed theirs away, but I knew Indonesians would go nuts after the bags. I brought 5 home and sure enough they were snapped up. Other nick nacks that I have disgarded were also taken as gifts.

Visit from the mother in law in Seminyak Bali
Wednesday night my mother in law (sounds funny to say it) arrived from Semarang in Java by bus and we got together for a couple of hours. At the moment she is staying with Ika's sister in the kost in Kuta but will move in with us at some point. The 12-hour bus ride didn't seem to dampen her spirits and she is obviously glad to see Ika. I think having her married and getting things on the right track was her goal and I hope she has a nice time while she's here.
