Ika, Jevon and I went down to the British Consulate in Sanur today, to clarify the procedure for getting her a visa to visit the UK. Britain specializes in bureaucracy and the immigration is no different.
Living in Bali for the past 3 years I have had make numerous visa runs to Singapore. Often these have been slightly stressful as the Indonesian embassy closes at 12 noon and will not accept any new processing requests until the next day. If you get your paperwork in before noon, you an pick it up the same afternoon. Of course the attraction for me is I can get back to Bali in the same day, if I can make it to the Consulate from Changi airport.
Bali expats got a boost with the news the government relaxed the rules regarding permanent resident status. Said legislator Boy. W. Saul “”Basically, we agreed to ease the procedures for foreigners who believe they are entitled to Indonesian citizenship or permanent resident status.”
Today I got a call from one of the lovely young ladies at Arjuna immigration consultants in Kerobokan. My monthly visa extension was coming around again and I needed to pay the fee, sign papers and give 2 passport photos. Being in Kuta at the time, knocking out a bunch of errands I swung by the Fuji camera shop on the left side of Jl. Legian in Kuta. The 4 photos cost me 20,000rp and took 5 minutes.
This morning at Cafe Seminyak, a recent European transplant to Bali was telling me about his troubles with the Indonesian immigration. "They always give me trouble." He said. I told him that for someone living in Bali its better to use an immigration consultant to handle your paperwork. "I use Arjuna immigration consultants," I said "and I never come face to face with the immigration."
Recently I wrote some stuff about visas in Indonesia, one of which being the Retirement Visa.
Employment visas for Indonesia differ from countries like the US. A foreigner trying to get a work visa in the US has to have an air-tight set of credentials, otherwise forget in. Here in Indonesia employment visas are easily obtainable, the thing you have to be prepared for is red tape.
Since the Suharto days Indonesia has had a mistrust of foreigners. We make the government nervous, because they can’t control us. We have access to the foreign press, foreign consulates and often speak up on issues that Indonesian citizens won’t.
My passport is pretty much full. Indonesia requires visitors to have a few blank pages when entering as well as the passport being good for at least 6 months. If you don’t they can send you home on the next flight, or more likely, pull you aside and offer a ’solution’. This could be $50 or more. Last time I came in the Andrew Jackson ($20) inside my passport greased the wheels sufficiently for trouble to be avoided.
This morning I paid a visit to Arjuna immigration consultants in Kerobokan for my visa extension. Just before Jevon's birth I went to Singapore to renew the whole set of paperwork for my Business visa. The way that works is I pay them money and they arrange everything. Some travel sites talk about visas and say that Business visas and KITAS are hard to get. With a consultant you fill out some paperwork and they arrange it for you.
