Seminyak has a power outage this evening, at least the part of Seminyak north of Bintang supermarket, which includes the area in which I live.
Steaming hot after here on the Island of the Gods. Visiting my workout center on Blue Ocean beach, I observed some sweaty looking tourists, including older couples struggling with the high curbs and trying to ignore the sun searing the tops of their heads. One guy I saw just wasn’t fit to be out, wearing a pair of shorts, 40 pounds overweight and sweating like a madman. My lunch warung of choice has lately flipped between Ocha’s on the corner of Jl. Seminyak and Jl.Plawa, and Warung Murah, on Jl. Double Six. There places serve consistently good Indonesian food. Warung Murah serves great chicken breasts and boiled pototoes, Ocha’s does roast potatoes and roast chicken, Balinese style vegetables and tuna. See the common denominator? If you want ‘bules’ to come, serve potatoes.
Ika is having more of her headache / fever / chills cycle today. I’ve spent time helping her and Jevon, which is like juggling balls. With all the weird things that can happen to a person over here, its anyone’s guess what she’s got. Her sister has something that might be measles, there is an epidemic of that in Korea right now.
Back to renting a scooter for while. This afternoon my friend Palu and I went along to meet the owner of the trail bike I was intending to buy. Having the money ready I was interested in his opinion.
Life in Bali is very different from the place most expats originate from. Not just the climate or the scenery, but the whole mentality, priorities and thought process of the locals. That’s actually part of the attraction of Bali.
Sitting here in an internet cafe in Seminyak, a lady just ran in and asked if her cell phone was found. I know that feeling having lost one myself, its not fun and she is in for a few frustrating hours.
Back in 2003 when I moved to Bali, there seemed to be a police roadblock every few days. No big deal if your paperwork is in order, but some people have reason to sweat. If you’ve forgotten your license, borrowed your mate’s bike without the registration, or have something wrong with the bike, such as no speedo / gas gauge (as in the trail bike I was looking at), they’ll hit you up for money.
Yesterday I purchased a soft guitar case at Matahari department store in Kuta. Its says ‘Yamaha’ on the outside (which is a brand of guitar), but the case is cheap and obviously not made by Yamaha. For 51,000rp I wasn’t complaining as the new case ,equipped with backpack style straps allows me to be mobile.
Illness an occasional fact of life in Bali. This weekend Ika has been down with a fever. She has a massive headache, fever interspersed with chills. Strangely her sister is down with something as well. Many illnesses share similar symptoms, so its anyone’s guess what her problem is. In any case, rest and hydration are super important.
