Getting the kid inoculated in Denpasar Bali

Jevon has his last Hep B shot today at Puri Bunda hospital in Denpasar. Taxi fares have gone up since the fuel increases and the fare was 55,000rp each way. Thank God the innoculation was free.

Spending time at the Eco Lodge in Tabanan Bali- part IV

Linda: Natural health expert.
linda101905.jpgLinda Van Hoff is an amazing lady. Originally from New Zealand, she has raised 2 lovely kids and is home schooling them here in the mountains of Bali. Linda and Norm live inside the last real section of jungle in Bali and she told me that tour groups come up here to 'explore' while she and the family live here as normal. Linda used to certify organic farms in Bali. The demand for organic produce from large hotels and restaurants has spurned many farms growing western favorites such as lettuce, tomatoes and other things not in the Balinese diet. Linda is a repository of knowledge on the organic food movement and remedies. She gave me a box of bottles of the Bali Belly Buster, a solution containing colloidal silver, guaranteed to knock out the ill feelings and get you on a fast track to health. Bali Belly Buster is sold at Bali Deli, Dijon Deli, Bali Buddha in Ubud and other places in the main tourist areas.

Legian Clinic: A handy place for simple ailments in Kuta Bali

Your fun packed holiday in Bali can sometimes get derailed by illness or injury. For people staying in Kuta who want somewhere and don't want to pay the prices that BIMC and SOS charge, you might try Legian Clinic. The clinic is located on Jl. Benesari about 10 meters in from Jl. Legian close to Mama's. Open 24 hours it offers a range of simple services like eye irrigation and wound attention. I went in and used the bathroom which was upstairs. The building is old and feels like an 'affordable clinic'. It doesn't have the spotless feel of BIMC, but then again that doesn't mean the treatment isn't good. Doctors are available on call.

Thoughts on being an expat in Bali

Recently a magazine article I read talked about what it's like being an expat in Bali. The European writer moved to Bali from Phuket Thailand and compared the 2. He said that for him Bali is the best expat community in the world and that is what makes living here so pleasant. In the past I have mentioned my reasons for choosing Bali as a place to live. My criteria were affordability, decent internet access, an international airport and year round tourism. I didn't really choose Bali, it chose itself. People who I've met since have told me I made a great choice and that the expat scene here is the best in Asia.

Jevon is moving along well in Seminyak Bali

Thursday Ika, Jevon and I went to Puri Bunda hospital on Jl. Gatut Subroto in Denpasar. We go once a month for regular check ups and immunisasi. This time Jevon got a Hep B shot. We have always taken the taxi, but since the petrol prices went up, taxi prices doubled. I hate sitting in a taxi in a traffic jam watching the clock tick over. We took the motorbike, which for me was less stress, because I took a route that avoided the usual blockages and could keep moving.

Crook stomach in Seminyak Bali

Monday here in Bali I have crook stomach and a good case of the runs. This happens to many visitors to Bali due to a number of factors including the water. This time around it was my fault, some bbq chicken was the culprit.

Trip to the doctors in Denpasar Bali

There is a flu bug going around in Bali right now and I know people who have had it for a month. I have a sinus infection, which is no big deal, but Ika and Jevon have it too. Jevon cries more than normal and the other day I saw Ika trying to insert his dummy (pacifier). "Why are you doing that?" I asked. "He's crying because he can't breathe through his nose." She said. "You think it's a good idea to put a dummy in his mouth right now?" I said. There's no accounting for logic, maybe Jevon was crying because he was being choked. I don't worry about it and let them work it out.

A return visit to Puri Bunda hospital in Denpasar Bali

ning070805.jpgOne week after the birth of Jevon, Ika and took him to the baby doctor for a check up. Lucky for us the doctor is located in Denpasar close to Dr. Zakaria's office. Before we left the house Ika was trying on a new corset, she has one for sleeping and needs a different one for walking. It's cool as we have both brothers over at the house together with Ningrum, Ika's sister. Her mother came with us to the doctor. This morning Ika's auntie Daisy came over to bathe Jevon. He's lucky to have so many of his relatives want to take care of him. A week after the birth on Jevon Ika and I had to pay a return visit to Puri Bunda for a check up and a Hepatitis B shot. This was included in the cost of the birth.

Home visit from the nurse in Seminyak Bali

nurse070505.jpgJevon was born on June 30th in Denpasar and it has been 5 day now that we have had him home. Dr. Zakaria attached a clip to his navel, which irritates him a bit. Dr. Zakaria said the wound would heal up after 5 days and until now we have been getting him checked every day by a nurse from Puri Bunda. The 'skinny nurse' as Ika calls her, is very nice and bathes Jevon. She usually arrives in the morning but today came after work at 3.30pm. The charge for her visits are 40,000rp which while I don't want to pay for too much longer, are worth it in the initial stages. We will hire a local nanny but eventually but like having someone with some medical experience to check on him.
