A Lesson from Waisak
Today, Buddhists across the country will celebrate Waisak, to commemorate the birth of the Lord Buddha, his enlightenment and passing more than 2,500 years ago. As in the past the faithful gathering at Borobudur Temple in Magelang and other areas will include those who traveled from other countries, an annual reminder of old creeds that transcend national borders. Today in Indonesia there are barely 2 million followers of Buddhism, or 1 percent of our vast population, though Buddhism is known as Indonesia’s oldest religion, apart from Hinduism. As the state retains its policy of acknowledging only six (from earlier five) religions, those who would otherwise declare themselves Taoists, for instance, are also thought to be included in that 1 percent figure, having officially to be Buddhist on their identity cards as an article in the Opinion explains.

Bali Arts Festival Dates
The one festival and time of the year I enjoy is the Bali Arts Festival. A potpourri of drama, dance and culture combine to make it one of the most enjoyable attractions of the year. Twenty provinces from Indonesia will join the festival this year by presenting their cultural arts and handicrafts as well as twelve arts troupe from eight countries. The international events would include a world `wayang` (puppet shadow) festival and an ASEAN ethnic music festival. The theme this year will be “Citta Wretti Nirodha” or a self-controlling behaviour toward the balance and …

Bird-Flu Handling Exercises in Bali
No, I’m not talking about chickens running the marathon along Ngurah Rai Bypass or down Jalan Legian but rather bird flu handling exercises to be held in Bali on April 25-27th. These exercises will be conducted in three places. They are at Ngurah Rai Airport and at Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar as well as the general hospital in Tabanan. What’s it all about you ask. Simple, the Indonesian government wants to show the world that it is getting a handle on the bird-flu situation in the country. So, they invited 42 representatives of international health agencies and foreign governments …

Billabong Pro Junior Series Indonesia
Billabong has released the official dates for the Pro Junior Series in Bali for 2008, announcing a return to the prime locations of Keramas, Kuta Reef and Canggu for the three event circuit. The inaugural 2007 series dished up some of the tastiest waves the juniors had seen in a long time and 2008 will again see a return to the same venues. The events are open to any global competitor willing to try their hand against the local Indo rippers, you just need to be aged 20 and under. While the events are not ASP sanctioned, (no ratings points) what better way to spend three months than chillaxing in Bali, chewing Nasi Goreng, sampling the local festivities and getting piped with only three other guys in the water.

Valentine’s Day in Bali
February 14th is for girls not guys. A traitor named St. Valentine started this whole thing off years ago, big business having taken the ball and run with it. Valentine’s Day in Bali is less strenuous on the wallet than it might be in a western country. Last night I stopped by Roxy, the girl’s surf wear store in Kuta nad picked up a cute little t-shirt for Ika (220,000rp), plus a bar of Fruit & Nut. The girl at Circle K grinned when I chucked the chocolate on the counter and said “Valentine?”

Tumpek Wayang
Today in Bali is Tumpek Wayang, also known as Tumpek Ringgit. It is a Kajeng Kaliwon and is of particular importance. Some areas of Bali use this day to make offerings to musical instruments and dance equipment. This day is also important for the shadow puppets, Wayang Kulit. Many families have inherited puppets from an ancestor who performed them, a dalang. All dalangs have full sets of puppets. The puppets are taken from the box, placed in a position just as if an actual performance were being given and blessed by the owner. A Dalang …

Jason Monet Exhibition: Ubud
Art and orangutans don’t appear to have much in common. However, for internationally recognized artist Jason Monet, conservation of the threatened primate starts with bamboo. According to the Bali-based artist, the more the arts, architecture and just about everything else from food to furniture uses bamboo, the longer orangutans on Sumatra and Kalimantan will have a home. Jason has been working with bamboo for the past two years, using it for his sculptures and to frame his paintings.

Earth Day
Today across the world it is Earth Day and this is day each year that marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Actually the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This in turn led to the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts. Earth Day became a global event in 1990 and gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide. From previous Earth Days a lot of progress has been made to protect our planet. For instance, the1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Since then, the Global Summit in Bali. On the island of Bali today it will be a day of cleaning up.

Two Exhibitions in Bali
Being a great lover of the arts and forever in galleries and museums, it is the art of photography that is my passion. Travel anywhere in Bali and the photographic opportunities are endless. The same can be said for the rest of Indonesia and in fact, South-East Asia. Currently there are two excellent photographic exhibitions in Bali. Here’s more from Bali Discovery.
