Bali Meeting Travellers In Bali

Renting a car in Legian Bali

Renting your own transport is the best way to explore Bali, in my opinion. This morning my friends from Oregon wanted to join our friend Palu, who was surfing at Green Ball, on the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula. He said to meet him at his house at 8.30am. prblem was most of the car rental places on Jl. Dhyana Pura open around 9am.

Kids in Bali

mayaMy old friend Toby, from Eugene Oregon, brought his 3 year old daughter Maya, with him as well as friends, Ollie and Asia. This morning we strolled down to Cafe Seminyak for a coffee, and the ‘kid treatment’ started, with every waitress and shop attendent carrying Maya off, telling her she was ‘cantik’ (beautiful). This morning they were getting the ‘Bali experience’, seeing Balinese people laying offerings on the street and acquaintences of mine saying hello. I know as a parent you have to be careful who you leave your child with, but out here, there are many willing pairs of hands, and the kids definteily feel comfortable with people who are used to kids.

Saturday evening at Mykonos in Semiyak Bali

Mykonos is a Seminyak standard. The Greek styled restaurant serves a range of starters and main courses, that when combined with the decor and music, takes you straight to the Mediteranian.

Heading to Candi Dasa on Saturday

Saturday morning I will be off to Candi Dasa, in Karangasem, East Bali. Karangasem is one of my favourite parts of Bali and Candi Dasa can be a good base for the region.

Kuta Beach for newcomers

kuta beach baliKuta Beach is a crash course in how to deal with locals and bargaining. Today I took my freinds form Oregon, to the section of Kuta Beach, directly across from Poppies II. Kuta Beach can leave people with varying impressions and I was a bit nervous, knowing the vendors can descend like mozzies on a bare bottom. Sitting under a tree, next to a drink vendor (Niki), we were provided with chairs and were immediatley swamped by vendors, selling temporary tattoes, bow and arrows, massage, nail cleaning and other goods and services. Nobody panicked and after 15 minures most of them drfited off, realising we weren’t buying.

Meeting friends in Bali

Sunday afternoon I picked up friends from Oregon at Ngurah Rai airport. Flying in on Garuda, they were bang on time and a taxi office ticket for 60,000rp, got the 5 of us back to Seminyak and the hotel I picked for them.

Charlie Sellers’ view of Padangbai Bali

Padangbai is a small fishing village in East Bali. I first ent in 1993, when it was teeming with backpackers and divers. Now its a backwater, with more sarong vendors than tourists. Still there are 3 white sand beaches, in Padangbai that might take your fancy. Back in 2004, Charlie Sellers visited Padangbai and gave us his impression.

Evening at Discovery Mall in Tuban Bali

This evening I had dinner in one of the restaurants, at the back of Discovery Mall in Tuban. Barrie and his family were well familiar with the food options, as they have checked out the restaurants there before. We were joined by 2 ladies (Dina and Ani) from Yogyakarta, close to where Barrie’s wife, Candika lives.
