Indonesia Independence Day remissions a mystery to many
Indonesia has today given sentence remissions to 10 convicted people guilty of aiding and abetting the Kuta bombings in 2002 which killed 202 people. Indonesia hands out remissions across the board for criminals who show good behavior. Six men involved in the Oct. 12, 2002, terror strikes that claimed 202 lives - 88 of them Australians - had their sentences cut by five months, said Ilham Djaya, the chief warden at Bali’s main prison, citing good behavior. Four others convicted for the 2005 attacks that left 20 people dead received two month remissions, he said.

Bali rattled by earthquake
Bali was rattled by a powerful earthquake last night, reminding us once more we’re on shaky ground. The quake was centered deep under west Java and was felt as far as Sumatra.

Bali restaurants nervous about ayam kampung
The recent bird flu outbreak in Bali and caused some restaurants to remove ayam (chicken) from the menu. People who contract avian flu tend to be the people who keep the chickens rather than eat them, which is good news for fatties in KFC, bad news for granny in the kampung. Sunset Rd or Sunset Strip?
Bali’s Sunset Rd is an offshoot of Bypass Ngurah Rai. Funded by the World Bank and finally completed in 2003, it allows traffic coming off of Jl. Raya Kerobokan to access Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Tuban and the airport in 25 minutes max. The Sunset Rd was aptly named as sunsets are lovely from that vantage point, but recent developments do not please everyone.
