Bali About Us

Looking for houses in Legian Bali

Many people ask about houses and villas. Sure the holiday villas are well advertised, with silly rates to match. Long term rentals are all over the place too, but are a bit harder to find. Riding up Jl. Legian and checking out the bulletin boards in cafes and warungs used by westerners is a good idea. Another great idea is to rent a motorbike / scooter, and ride down the small gangs (alleys) they crisscross, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak.

Interview with Putu at Pawitra Sari Gallery in Bali

The owner and operator of Pawitra Sari Gallery in Mas, is Putu. He was kind enough to show me round and explain a few things. When I visited the gallery was empty, except for the ladies outside making baskets. I asked the prices and they told me between 200,000-400,000rp depending on the size. Feel free to negotiate. I did not ask the the prices of the paintings or carvings. The Ubud area is full of galleries, most of which are showrooms, with a single or a handful of artists offering their work. I sense this place is trying to be more, but they need a lot more stuff on show.

Looking back to Feb 2nd 2003

Moving into my first house in Bali 3 years ago happened on this day in 2003. I remember clearly living in Ronta Bungalows in Kuta with Sean, the 2 twin bed room costing something like 35,000rp per night. We were just getting set up in Bali and were lucky to have a place like Ronta that was, cheap, handy and low stress. Back then Kuta was relatively quiet and Ronta had only a couple of other guests, including a noisy Italian woman next door.

Helping Cody & Jeff look for a house in Seminyak Bali

Jeff & Cody do not know Seminyak very well and my local knowledge came in handy. Riding down Jl. Drupapi we stopped and checked out a couple of places. One of those, the Mahalini Bungalows has cute 2 storey cottages, a shared pool and plenty of trees. Open air downstairs, AC bedrooms. The price was aroind 40m rp per year. Jeff and Cody don’t know if they are staying in Bali and only want to commit for 3 monthes at a time. They also love 3 things, the internet, AC and PlayStation. Cody told me if the TV doesn’t allow PlayStation they aren’t taking the house.

Interview with artist Ketut Arsana in Lodtunduh Bali

While sitting at the babi guling stand at the crossroads at Lodtunduh, I was joined by a Balinese fellow in his 30’s named Ketut Arsana. We chatted and Ketut told me he was married to one of the ladies at the stand and had a 12 year old kid. These people start early. Ketut is an artist and a dancer, with a studio, Ayong located in Batuan. That area is rich for artists as Ketut explained ‘whatever style of art you want, in Batuan there are too many artists.”

Kuta Beach 3 years ago

On this day 3 years ago I ate breakfast at Cafe Moka in Seminyak then went to Internet Outpost on Poppies Lane II in Kuta. In those days I did not have home internet access, which made me more social, but less productive.

Interview with Nyoman from Poinciana Resort in Tejakula Bali

Poinciana is a small place my brother and I stumbled on last year. It has obviously been made by someone who cares about quality and the section of coast is peaceful and quiet. The owner is Nyoman from Kuta, who is a unique lady. After spending 20 years in Australia and picking up an Aussie accent, she decided to move back to Bali and start Poinciana.

Interview with Brian Moore in Kuta Bali-part II

Brian Moore is a lover or travel, people and music. Like me, he doesn’t really play any instruments, but he loves world music and various other stuff.

Idul Adha: A special day for Muslims in Indonesia

Ika told me that today is a special day for Muslims in Indonesia. I did a short interview with her to learn why. The occassion is Idul Adha and it originates from the Quran. Killing a sheep for a feast is a signature of this day. I’ll probably not take part, although I’m into the food part. Today is a national holiday, so banks and government buildings are closed.
