Talking to Ika about being a parent and kids names

Ika has been a mother for over 10 months already. There have been huge changes in Jevon, from the screaming little package we brought home, to a kid that can react to his surroundings. Compared to western women, and other Indonesian women who have to wash, clean, cook and work, Ika’s life is a dream.

Nyoman: Handicraft vendor Poppies I Kuta

Poppies Lane I is another narrow gang that leads from Jl. Legian to the beach. Originally just a sandy track, lined with palm trees, its now a brick lane, lined with shops. I spoke to Nyoman, owner of a small place selling decorations. Nyoman’s shop, which actually doesn’t have a name, is situated next to Kedin’s Cafe, the Thai / Asian place about 100 meters from the beach.

Bali Bombing 2002

Bali Bomb I in 2002 caused a massive amount of human casualties, collateral damage and economic pain for Bali. I arrived in Bali on Jan 2nd 2003, not long after the event. Not knowing where the Sari Club or Paddy’s were, I passed the site many time before figuring it out.

Talking with Ningrum about Indonesia and nuclear power

My sister in law is a perky character, and always has her own set of interests she wants to tell me about. One day it could be the new rules for registering your cell phone, another time it could be a new model of motorbike that has come out. Usually its very local, and I’m in the position of listening an going “Oh.”

Interview with Jennifer Renniger in Seminyak Bali

American tourist Jennifer Renniger has recently arrived in Bali for a thrilling 8 day trip. Jennifer came Portland Oregon via Singapore and started off her trip by missing her plane. Staying at the beach end of ‘party street’, Jl. Dhyana Pura, in Seminyak, Jennifer is getting over her jet-lag by relaxing, getting massages and manicures. Today she called me and I took her on a ride around Kerobokan. My intended lunch stop was Warung Gossip, but on arrival at 1.30pm, the food was wiped out.

Kuta Beach Bali: An idyllic part of the world

Here’s a picture of heaven, beautiful Kuta Beach Bali, this afternoon. There were Euro’s and Aussies on the beach, as well as people enjoying the gentle waves, on this windless afternoon. Under the trees, drink sellers, bakso vendors and board renters got comfortable, and adjusted to the slow pace of business. I saw an older tourist enjoying a game of chess with a locals, and some Japanese ladies giggle, at Balinese boys hoisting their friend into a tree.

Talking to Ningrum about Nyepi in Bali

My house in Seminyak has 5 of us staying here right now. As well as myself are Ika, Jevon, Awang and Ningrum. We have a on of food and I will bbq some steak and chicken later on. Nyepi means we cannot leave the house, even for a minute, the pecalang will be patrolling and will be angry if they see us outside. I’m not Hindu but being in Bali respect their religious beliefs.

Laura’s driver Roy

Laura introduced me to her friend and driver last night. Immediately I got good vibes from him and learned that his name is Roy and he is from Gianyar. We chatted a bit in Bahasa Indonesia and drove to Sanur. Laura has used Roy the last few times she has been to Bali. The hotel staff offer their own driver, but Laura prefers Roy. She told me that he is a considerate and honest fellow. Often when they go around and she offers him lunch, he will politely decline, prefering to stay in the car.
