Baliblog: I've heard that a common scenario that occurs to people moving to Bali is that for the first 6 months they are flying in the clouds, everything is wonderful. Then after a series of let downs everything is negative, then after a year or so they reach a balance.
Jay: When you ask what I mean about the culture and what to I like about it. First of all, the first thing you notice in Bali is people offer these wonderful smiles that really don't have any deception, there is nothing tarnished about 95% of Balinese smiles. They're just gorgeous and it's a true smile and I challenge anyone to find another part of the world where you will find more 'free smiles'. I call them 'free smiles' because it's a person not expecting anything else, offering a beautiful smile to brighten your day and that maybe sounds a bit cliche.
Jay is a 37 year old musician from the US who has become an Australian citizen. His wife Debbie was born in Papua New Guinea and is also an Australian citizen. They have a 6 month old daughter Sienna. I asked Jay for his thoughts on Bali and why he came this time.
Baliblog:
You spent 2 nights in the Grand Bali Sani Suites in Kerobokan, what was your opinion of it?
Chris:
It was a nice place, with a great location on the beach.
Chimene Hickey is an old friend of mine who I have known going back to 1988 in Santa Barbara California. She has lived for a total of 5 years in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra which had a flash flood in late 2003 which wiped out 90% of the village.
Baliblog: Can you tell people for example, we used to live in California, and in California things are made to look beautiful. How does that differ?
Baliblog: What is it that attracts you about Bali in general?
Jay: Well for me it's the culture and the people.
Baliblog: What is it about the culture and the people you like?
Jay: Because you find it.
Baliblog: For someone who has never been here you say 'the culture and the people' and they say 'what does that mean?'
Jay. Exactly. Well it means a lot of things
