The Beach House in Canggu Bali
Last night I went out to Canggu to visit a friend of mine who recently moved out there. My friend said he likes living in the ‘kampung’ (village), as it is closer to nature, with rice fields all around and the beach close. At night time, Canggu is certainly quiet, the only noises being local dogs and a few motorbikes. One of the favourite places in Canggu, is the Beach House, located at Echo Beach. This place has expanded since I last visited and has a nightly bbq, seafront bar, inside dining area and couches. My friend and I lounge on the large bamboo couches and talked about travel for a couple of hours. Sometimes going over a past trip with someone, helps to rekindle the excitement, one felt years before.

Dissappearing jungle in Bali
When I ride around the highlands of Bali, I can see how it once was, uninterupted hills, stretching to the horizon, a canopy of nothing but green. I can also see where the forest ends and where the rice fields start. Rice fields are lovely, they are also a man made creation.

Butterfly Park in Tabanan Bali
Bali has a wide variety of attractions and I try to cover as many of them as possible. The Butterfly Park in Tabanan is one of the smaller attractions within reach for people in the Kuta area.

Nusa Lembongan Bali
Nusa Lembongan is the most popular of the 3 islands across the Badung Strait (the others being Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida). The island is popular with surfers for the 3 breaks (Playgrounds, Shipwrecks and Lacerations), day cruise people and overnight tourists. Nusa Lembongan is only 4km long and no wider than 3km wide and takes 3-4 hours to walk around. There are motorbikes for hire in Jungkutbatu. The reefs are enjoyed also by scuba divers and the snorkeling is awesome.

Mountain pitstop at Sanda Butik Villas Bali
A pitstop made in heaven is too good to miss. Sanda Bukit Villas, just south of Pupuan, has been mentioned on this site many times, and today I visited while passing through. A pot of ginger tea and a large bowl of potato and leek soup were just the ticket, for a warm up after the cloudy nature of the highlands took a few degrees out of me. The owner, Ted, from Holland, told me yesterday they had some Balinese guests, who were on their way to a ceremony. Sanda Butik Villas is the place that travel writer Bill Dalton, told me he goes to for relaxation. That’s a guy who wrote THE BOOK on Indonesia, talking.

Trip to coastal Tabanan Bali
Sunday came along again, and I got ready to head out on a short road trip, after I escaped the killer bees, that is. Taking the ‘back way’ to Canggu, via Batubelig, gave me a view of how Canggu is developing. The main road to Canggu, that runs off of Jl. Raya Kerobokan, gets a ton of traffic, creating severe traffic jams during rush hour.

Balian: Surf spot in West Bali
When people think of surf spots in west Bali, they think of Medewi. Earlier this week, passing through Soka Beach, Barrie, who is an experienced surfer, pointed out some okay places to surf. Back in 2003, I visited Balian, a quiet place in west Bali, that gets swell. Looking back on it, we were in a great location.
