Discovery Mall Bali
The largest addition to the tourist scene in the Kuta area in recent years is the Discovery Shopping Mall located across from Waterbom Park on busy Jl. Kartika Plaza in Tuban. The place is very impressive looking and designed to attract attention.

Nike Store: Tuban Bali
Every town needs a Nike store and the Kuta area has one on Jl. Kartika Plaza, in Tuban. The Nike store is classified as a ’semi-factory outlet’, even though there is no merchandise being produced on the premises. The Nike store is a clean looking place, brightly lit and decorated with pictures of sports stars and when I visited, sale signs offering 30%-50% off were all over. Nike makes some good gear, but its overpriced and the prices here in Bali are aimed more at Europeans, Australians and Japanese, than the locals, or Americans.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts come to Bali
Western civilization is on a steady slide back into the swamp. Part of the death of western culture, is the fact we have to much stuff to take care of, and so many things we ‘need’ that we spend many of our waking hours not actually living, but in pursuit of something. The latest temptation to come to Bali is Krispy Kreme, the marketing concept born in the US, and germinated around the globe.

Police Raids Crackdown on Pirate DVDs
DVD shops are everywhere in Bali, literally. There always seems to be a new shop opening up every day selling pirated copies of the latest movies and music to suit all tastes, and, tourists are buying up big.

Discovery Shopping Mall parking
Jl. Kartika Plaza is quite a busy 2-lane street. Its tourist alley, or more accurately, ‘just arrived tourist alley’. The big draw on the street is Discovery Mall during the day. There is scarce parking on the street, with wall to wall motorbikes. Less chance for cars. Fortunately Discovery Mall has a basement parking area. To the left of the building is a channel for motorbikes to go through, and a larger one for cars. I rode though today and stopped to be handed a paper ticket out of a machine.

Joger in Tuban Bali
Joger is a shop on Jl. Raya Tuban, that is popular with Indonesian tourists. Ika told me in the past her school group from Semarang bought t-shirts from this shop. For westerners, Joger doesn’t mean anything, we’re oriented toward Nike, Adidas, Billabong and Quiksilver. Ika told me that Joger is a specialty t-shirt shop, famous for its slogans. Outside the shop, is a big sign saying ‘Pabrik kata-kata’ (we have a factory of words). I parked across the busy street, which is lined with Javanese and other Indonesian food places. Inside Joger domestic tourists were funneled through the shop in prescribed direction. Joger sells Balinese handicrafts, t-shirts, bags, hats and other small gifts.

Bali Nightlife scene in Seminyak / Kuta
The nightlife scene in Bali is a worked of its own. To fully have a handle on it you’d need a fulltime staff, that’s why I asked the Beat Magazine to let me post their bi-weekly Update.

Lunch at Classic Cafe: Discovery Mall Tuban
Leaving it late for lunch today I remembered a place in Discovery Shopping Mall in Tuban, that overlooks the ocean. Classic Cafe is a unique little place that has outside seating under shades and an inside area. In the evenings they also have band. Walking through the mall, I wasn’t tempted to buy anything, but did see one encouraging sight, a young lady handing out beer vouchers (won’t see any of that under Sharia Law). Upon closer investigation I found out the vouchers were an inviation to buy something first and get a beer. Oh well, I still like their style, pretty girls and beer are a winner.

Discovery Mall: Tuban Bali
Discovery Mall on Jl. Kartika Plaza in Tuban is the huge white building you can see for miles. You can be in Seminyak and see it across the water, just left of the airport. Anyway Discovery Mall is very popular with locals and tourists. Locals loves to browse and buy the hot sugary dough they sell inside the front door, while foreigners like the surf wear, sports gears and batik sarongs.
