Bali Tuban Restaurants

Kafe Batan Waru: Tuban

mini-clbo8-b-865.jpgAs a great lover of Javanese food I am a regular patron at Kafe Batan Waru in Tuban. The sister restaurant to the one in Ubud, the cuisine is just as delicious and although not in a garden setting, the décor more than makes up for this. Located opposite Waterbom Park in Tuban and a stone’s throw from the Discovery Mall, Kafe Batan Waru is not your ordinary open-air warung. Adorning the walls on one side are beautiful collection of flora and fauna prints, and the other, classic prints of Indonesia during the colonial era. The décor is practically simple with polished, long wooden tables and benches giving the place that touch of class. I particularly like the ‘feel’ of the restoran, warm and comfy. And, as with all upmarket restoran the service is first-class.

Tuban Bali

Tuban is the first place most visitors to Bali see, as it is the location of the airport. Directly south of Kuta, this densely populated area features family hotels, shopping, restaurants and nightlife.

Bluefin: Japanese Fusion in Tuban Bali

bluefin baliBluefin is a modern-age Japanese concept restaurant. I have not eaten there as yet, but walking past, the design of the place alone demands attention. The impressive wine racks are pushed up against the front window. Located just down from Stadium Cafe, on Jl. Kartika Plaza, Bluefin has a Japanese fusion menu. Seating can be outside at a table, at a low Japanese style table, or inside in the cool.

Pepito’s Cafe: Tuban Bali

pepito'sTuban is an interesting place. Ngurah Rai airport is in Tuban, and a selection of large hotels line the beach, along Jl. Kartika Plaza. Riding around Tuban, away from Jl. Kartika Plaza, it becomes obvious that Tuban is a ‘local’ area, by that I mean, densely populated with wall to wall shops that serve local needs. One place that stands out, if you are a foreigner, is Pepito’s Cafe. This European styled restaurant is located adjacent to Pepito’s supermarket. Pepito’s has an extensive menu, and daily lunch specials. Today I went for the Special and it was quite good.
My Special was Cream Soup Dubarry, Chicken Tandoori Kebab, Balinese Safron Rice, Tomato Salad, Marinated Fruit Salad.

Batan Waru: Indonesian restaurant in Tuban Bali

batan waruBatan Waru is a modern Indonesian restaurant, located on busy Jl. Kartika Plaza in Tuban. As with some other restaurants in Bali, Batan Waru now has a photo menu, to go along with the standard printed menu. This helps to give new visitors to Bali, an idea of what they are ordering. Everything on the menu looked good and like it’s sister restaurant in Ubud, the Tuban branch promised great things. My lunch was a dish called Semur Tahu (tofu, round eggplants and shiitake mushrooms in a garlic, soy and coconut milk broth, served with steamed rice) for 34,000rp.

Yan’s Cafe: Tuban Bali

yan's cafe baliFunny how once in a while you get a blast from the past. Today while checking out places in Tuban, I wandered past the first hotel I stayed at in Bali, or at least, when I moved here on Jan 1st 2003. I remember arriving in Bali, loaded down with gear, a rolled up sign under my arm and enough Bootsnall t-shirts to start a stall. Catching a taxi from the airport, I ended up at the cheapest place on main street Kartika Plaza, Yan’s. Back then I paid 100,000rp a night and thought that was good, until I checked out Poppies Lane. Passing by today I asked the prices, which were 175,000rp for an AC room and 125,000rp for a fan room.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts come to Bali

Western civilization is on a steady slide back into the swamp. Part of the death of western culture, is the fact we have to much stuff to take care of, and so many things we ‘need’ that we spend many of our waking hours not actually living, but in pursuit of something. The latest temptation to come to Bali is Krispy Kreme, the marketing concept born in the US, and germinated around the globe.
