Jl. Kunti is steadily filling up with fancier places and a recent arrival is a beachwear place called The Depot. When I walked in the solo staff member was behind the counter, wishing it was time to go home. Seventeen year old Ayu from Sanur told me this was her first job and she liked working The Depot.
Oxygen is a trendy looking shop on Jl. Kunti that stocks a selection of interior decorations. Walking in I saw Buddha’s of various sizes and other decorations including wind chimes, wall hangings, Japanese soup bowls, cushions and candle holders. The staff told the biggest customers were Europeans and Australians. While checking out some of the prices, I noticed that a glass candle holder with the face of Buddha cost 450,000rp.
Mystic art gallery is a 2-storey place on Jl. Kunti in Seminyak. I’m no artist, but it seems to focus on abstract and ethnic art. Located just 30 meters in from Jl. Seminyak, Mystic is a handy place for shoppers who are cruising the main street. I talked to the staff who told me that photographing the art work was prohibited. Mystic features the work of many local Balinese artists.
Bali is famous for art and jewelry. You want silver jewelry go to Celuk, on the way to Ubud. Balinese craftsmen are very skilled. Here is Seminyak a friend of mine has a shop focusing on another part of the jewelry industry, beaded jewelry.
Wednesday afternoon I grabbed my new umbrella, iRiver and camera and headed out into the rain to do some interviews. My iRiver can play mp3’s and record from a built in mic. Its a handy little gadget and I am impressed by the sound quality, particularly compared to my old hand held tape player. After visiting several businesses on Jl. Dhyana Pura and Jl. Seminyak and talking with the staff and owners, I headed up to Eat Street (Jl. Oberoi). My interviews will be online as soon as I have a way to upload them and I found it quite easy to get people to talk.
One of the handiest place in Seminyak is Bali Deli. Located on Jl. Kunti between the Sunset Rd and Jl. Seminyak, Bali Deli, makes organizing a bbq or party so much easier. Open daily from 9am-10pm Bali Deli stocks cold meats, sausages, ice cream, cakes, beer, wine, salad items and all the little things like balsamic vinegar.
Tracy is a small shop on Jl. Kunti in Seminyak that sells a selection of woman’s clothes. I stopped in to check things out and saw Ayu, the sole member of staff wrapped in a shawl, the air-con on and she felt cold. Tracy sells bright colored clothes designed for use in climates like Bali.
Jl. Kunti is a side street off of Jl. Seminyak that has an interesting mixture of businesses. Probably the 2 biggest places on Jl. Kunti are Bali Deli and Prana Spa / The Villas. This afternoon I checked out some of the lesser player on the street.
Seventh Sense is a silver jewelry and accesories shop on Jl. Abimanyu (Dhyana Pura) close to Jef Burgers. Its a tidy little place and I interviewed Gusti, the solo employee. Gusti showed me a bracelet made from some semi precious stone that was going for 70,000rp. Seminyak has many neat little shops for people looking for a quality gift to take home for a friend. Here is what Gusti had to say.
Seminyak and Kerobokan are full of furniture places and on a walk down Jl. Seminyak this afternoon I checked one called Apo Kayan. Located directly across the street from Pantarei restaurant, the shop has some massive pieces including benches, couches, carved wall decorations and big wooden pots. Its like land of the giants and looking around I thought the kind of person buying this stuff must either have a hotel or a a very large house. Its cool though, you won't find this stuff in a catalog. I asked the lady in charge Yohan Wijaya, where she got her inventory from. She told me all over the country, Java, Sulawesi, all over. Her business card says 'Furniture, Art & Antiques' and that's the deal. A cool place to browse even if you aren't going to buy.
