Bali Seminyak Shopping

Lulu: Seminyak Bali

lulu'sLulu is a small shop on Jl. Seminyak, that catches the eye. I’m not into women’s clothes, but Lulu sells cute party dress and tops, that most women would love (or love to be able to wear). Made, the staff member on duty, told me she likes the clothing, but won’t wear it herself as she doesn’t want to look sexy. She told me ladies who want to look glamorous and to go out and party would love these dresses / tops. She said many people come into the shop everyday and business is good.

Jl. Seminyak: The main street where I live in Bali

flower powerStepping out of my gang (alley) in Seminyak gets me onto a busy street called Jl. Seminyak. This street isn’t that wide, the actual road is only about 10 meters, but it recieves a lot of traffic, at certain times of the day. Fifteen years ago, Jl. Seminyak was not busy, as most tourists had no reason to come up here. I remember back in 1993, a friends picked me up on his motorbike and took me to the ‘hippest palce in town’, Goa Cafe in Legian. Now its all changed, with Seminyak being ‘expat central’ and other areas such as Kerobokan, Umalas, Canggu attracting long term foreign residents.

Places in Seminyak to trust and avoid

Walking along Jl. Seminyak today, the sun was shining, the tourists were shopping and the traffic was crawling. Taking a bit more time to check things out today, I snapped a some photos of 3 places. Two I trust, and one I avoid.

Life’s little frustrations in Seminyak Bali

After getting all hot and bothered by my visa situation, I put on my Akubra hat and went for a walk. During my walk, I reflected that the same ‘dropping it in your lap’ treatment, had happened to some members of the Bali Nine, only they weren’t denied a visa extension, they were sentenced to death. I have nothing to complain about.

Le Spot: Bali Deli in Seminyak Bali

le spotBali Deli, the Seminyak expat’s place to food shop, has a handy little cafe, with an inside AC section, and an outside area, including cute little ‘bales’, where a small group can relax. According to Le Spot, ‘We are a French bistro-style restaurant serving international gourmet cuisine.’ When I visited in the mid-afternoon, the outside area was mostly full, with expats chatting, discussing business or taking a break.

Roti Segar - Fresh bread in Seminyak Bali

breadSeminyak has a new place to pick up fresh bread (how things have changed since the 80’s). Roti Segar on Jl. Oberoi, serves a small selection of locally made, Italian style bread. The shop is attached to an interior design place, so you’ll have to lookout for the fresh bread sign outside. According to the business card, they serve ‘Italian country bread baked in a wood fired oven’. I tried a jam filled croissant, for 4,000rp and it was okay. Inside the small shop was a range of good looking bread products.

Travelling as an Aussie in Bali

Australians really were ones who drove the tourist boom in Bali, with surfers arriving in the 1970’s followed by waves of package tourists.

Kuta Beach was, and still is the epicenter of the Australian tourist scene in Bali, with Tuban to the south and Legian to the north also being favourites.
