Bali Seminyak Nightlife

Meeting Yogya dancers at Galaxy in Seminyak

Last night I went down to Jl. Dhyana Pura for a drink and to check out the scene. Thursdays nights are quiet and I sat in Galaxy sipping a Bintang. Every Thursday night at 11pm they have fire dancers (2 guys in silver outfits twirling strings with flaming material on the end. It was pretty good, and I’m sure for those 2 guys, 10 minutes of that beats working in the rice paddy all day.

Duvel: A real Belgian beer at Street Life Bali in Seminyak

Sunday night I visited Luca at Street Life Bali on Jl. Oberoi. Luca tells me he has been getting a decent late night crowd and has been expanding his line of beers. The latest addition (addiction) is Duvel from Belgium. At 8.5 on the richter scale, this will rock your boat. Luca slowly poured me one and explained that in Belgium, as in Germany, people like their beer with a head on it. After he poured the Duvel, the foam climbed and looked like ice cream. The taste is deceptive. Initially I thought I could drink a bunch of these, but after sipping away for a while my opinion changed.

Interview with Luca from Street Life Bali in Seminyak

Eat street in Seminyak as it is sometimes called is also known as Jl. Oberoi (as well as Jl. Laksmana). If you want good food come down here. I don’t get out at night much any more and places open up without me realizing. One of those places was Street Life Bali, located about 50 meters closer to Jl. Seminyak than Rumours and on the other side of the road. I checked it out at around 4pm and the owner, Luca from Belgium was setting things up for the evening. Luca is a super nice guy and the open style of the bar means a low stress place to drop in, have a drink and leave. Luca understands this and how restaurant people, chefs and staff need a place to drink.

Interviews in Seminyak Bali

Wednesday afternoon I grabbed my new umbrella, iRiver and camera and headed out into the rain to do some interviews. My iRiver can play mp3’s and record from a built in mic. Its a handy little gadget and I am impressed by the sound quality, particularly compared to my old hand held tape player. After visiting several businesses on Jl. Dhyana Pura and Jl. Seminyak and talking with the staff and owners, I headed up to Eat Street (Jl. Oberoi). My interviews will be online as soon as I have a way to upload them and I found it quite easy to get people to talk.

Balinese modern music in Seminyak Bali

Jay just left last night at 1am with Debbie and Sienna. Jay is a decent guitar player and singer and on a couple of occasions we went out checked out the music scene in Seminyak. A couple of nights ago at JP's Warung in Seminyak we saw a duo, 2 Balinese guys playing rhythm and lead guitar, knocking out some western standards.

JP’s Warung in Seminyak Bali

Wet weather is our right now in Bali. At least in the late afternoons when the humidity builds up. Last night I had some food on Jl. Dhyana Pura and across the street could see JP’s Warung. JP’s is a neat little place. They serve good beer, the food isn’t bad and they do desserts ( and I’m not just talking about fruit, pancake and ice cream).

Spy Bar Bali: A trend setting place

Seminyak’s Jl. Dhyana Pura is the center of the nightlife in this area. The first bar on the street was Santa Fe, which started years ago. In the last 3 years many fancy places have sprung up and one that really started a trend was Spy Bar. Black and red were the predominant colors and slick was the style. Employees all looked trendy and its open to the street design, combined with a lounge area at the front made Spy Bar the perfect place to see and be seen.

Changing face of Seminyak

Bali has been changing rapidly in the last 10 year, both physically and socially. Ten years ago it was not on for a Balinese girl to date a foreigner, at least not without the understanding it would lead to marriage. I have a foreign friend who told me about a time when a girls male relatives came to his house looking for him. Fortunately she called him to warn him. Times are changing and new ideas are blooming in the midst of an old culture. In some areas in Seminyak it actually feels like an old culture trying to survive in the midst of rampant development.

Sharyn's trip to Bali - November 2005: Bars

Due to excessive shopping activity we didn't do any clubbing, but did managed to visit a few bars and pubs. Obviously KuDeTa is still there at the top of the list – although I can't decide whether I prefer later afternoon or full evening-it's a bit of a wave-watching versus stargazing toss-up.

Sunday night at Sin City in Seminyak Bali

Another place I hit on Sunday night was Sin City. Guys who love sport will love this place. The name is something of a misnomer, it's a classy place, with a restaurant, lounge bar and big screen TV. I met the owner Jeffry from Bali and told him how much my brother Chris and I liked his place.
