Spotting a benchong in Bali
Bali has a Hindu culuture that is socially accepting of many things, including different forms of sexuality. In my neighborhood, Seminyak, there is a higher than average population of ‘benchongs’ (transvestites), who tend to appear the later the evening gets. I don’t pretend to know or understand what benchongs do, or what their ultimate goal is, but attracting men seems to be a common denominator.

Inaugural Jetski Championships: Seminyak, Bali
Jet skis are one machine that I have never tried out and I really should. They are extremely popular with young tourists and can be hired at most upmarket hotels.

Music at Jaya Pub Seminyak Bali
Jaya Pub lived up to its reputation last night, and I got to rendezvous with my friend Richard from Batukaru. Walking into Jaya Pub at 10pm, the rectangular bar that is situated in front of the stage, was half full of people. As soon as I entered, 2 different staff and a member of the band, invited me to sit at the bar. At Jaya Pub its almost a cult calling to sit at the bar.

Guitar player: JP’s Warung in Seminyak Bali
Sitting in an empty JP’s Warung last night, I was joined at my table by a guy from Sumba. Alfonsus, was part of a duo playing that night and we chatted about the music scene in Bali. I told him for me, watching live music is a magical experience, especially when a musician or group really hits a song I like.

Spaghetti Jazz: Italian food in Seminyak
Spaghetti Jazz is an Italian restaurant located across the street from Bintang supermarket in Seminyak. The owner rides a BMW motorbike which is sometimes outside and the staff are friendly. Spaghetti Jazz is never that busy but is a great people watching place. Right next door is the best money changer in Bali, so while your partner is getting all sorted out with funny money, you can take the opportunity to sit back and sip a cappucino.

Benchongs: Part of the nightlife in Seminyak Bali
Many bars and nightclubs have PR staff outside to invite and entice customers in. It works for sure and there’s nothing that catches the eye like a nice set of legs. While sipping a beer in Galaxy I saw a tall, slender lady in the PR spot. Rather tall for an Indonesia, her slim figure widened at the shoulders. Finally I realized it was a benchong (transvestite). Funny thing was I saw this Aussie tourist come up to her / him from behind and give a little nudge in backside, smirking.
