B&B: Bali Watch Center & Handicraft

puzzlesLooking for cheap gifts for friends and relatives back home? You might try B&B, one of the shops I visited today on Jl. Legian. Situated close to the junction with Jl. Patih Jelantik, B&B is really a watch shop, that also sells handicrafts. Handicraft items include metallic faces of Buddha, and other elegant figures, suspended in a black frame. They also have cheeky Balinese surf drawings, that seem to focus on the ‘privates’ of the cartoon characters. The thing that caught my attention, was a bowl of wooden puzzles outside the shop. These are a Balinese version of the Rubik’s cube.

Legian Kids: Kids clothing in Bali

legian kidsLegian Kids is located on Jl. Legian, close to the junction with Jl, Patih Jelantik, the loop that comes around. Legian Kids has a range of bright colored kids clothing, that might be good as a gift for a friend with a young kid. The staff gave me a business card, with an address in Kerobokan, but the shop was definitely in Legian. The shop is open daily from 8.30am-10pm. All the clothing on sale is made locally.

Kaka Surf Shop: Bags in Legian Bali

kaka surf shopKaka Surf Shop on Jl. Pura Bagus Taruna, in Legian is the place to go, for people who need to haul there gear around. By gear, I mean surf boards, snow boards, body boards, skate boards, guitars, skiis and drums. Kaka Surf Shop make padded bags for all of these, allowing you to be mobile, whil protecting your equipment. I have a guitar at home and the case is a really nice one. Only problem is the case weighs about 25lbs and only had a single handle, making transportation uncomfortable. The solution might be to get a soft guitar case at Kaka Surf Shop.

Waris Leather: Legian Bali

waris leather shopWaris Leather is a small local shop located on Jl. Werkudara (Pura Bagus Taruna) in Legian. The shop is immediattely recognisable by the manequins wearing snakeskin jackets and tops. Inside the shop I spoke to a young lady from Java who was managing the place. She told prices for ladies and men’s snakeskin jackets ranged from 1.25m rp - 1.5m rp. Large leather bags, which looked good and well made, were going for 350,000rp - 750,000rp.

Kubu Bali Shop: Leather jackets in Legian Bali

leather jacketKubu Bali Shop is located on the point of the corner of Jl. Legian and Jl. Patih Jelantik. This leather fashion and tailor, is run by Nyoman Kartha, who was present when I visited. Nyoman had many women’s and men’s leather jackets on hand, as well as purses and leather bags. I tried on a large leather jacket, which was good, although a bit tight in the shoulders. Choosing a jacket in Bali, you have to consider how much clothing you’ll be wearing back at home in winter, and is the jacket big enough. Nyoman told me that the shop is open daily from 9am-9pm. A ladies jacket goes for around 700,000rp, a men’s jacket for around 800,000rp, purses are 150,000rp and bags 450,000rp. He said the size of the item is a contributing factor to cost, so Arnold Schwarzenegger will have to pay more than me.

Ianshen Art Shop: Legian Bali

ianshen art shopNext to Kaka Surf Shop, on Jl. Pura Bagus Taruna, in Legian, is Ianshen Art Shop. Although the sign says ‘handicrafts & souvenir’, the predominant product is drums. When I visited, both staff were in the process of enjoying their nasi campur, so I played with the drums for a short while, trying to get a sense of value. The staff told me prices of drums varied greatly, depending on size, materials and craftsmanship (your negotiating skills also come into that, which wasn’t mentioned). A basic 2 ft tall drum, with an artificial ’skin’ and a plain exterior, was 75,000rp. This went up incrementally with size (175,000rp, 300,000rp, 400,000rp etc). For a rabbit skin drum the price is higher. The staff pointed out a drum made out of black heavy wood, which they said was like ebony. They told me it was the only one in the shop, the price 750,000rp.

R.Diya Shop: Legian Bali

bagsIf you like cloth shoulder bags and bead necklaces, there is a place in Legian that has what you are looking for. R.Diya, located on Jl. Pura Bagus Taruna (Jl. Werkudara, the street that joins the Jayakarta and Jl. Legian) has a selection of brightly colored, casual shoulder bags and a wide selection of necklaces. In the back of the shop, a member of staff was sitting with a large bowl of beads, making a necklace. For sure you can find necklaces all over, and this shop has a great selection, ranging from beads, to beads with coconut, or shells. Some have silver too.

Guide to Padma area in Legian Bali

Last year I wrote about the beach / surfing break at Jl. Padma, in Legian. For beginning / intermediate surfers, who are tired of Kuta Beach / Halfway etc., but like the idea of being downtown, Padma is a good option.
