Glory Restaurant: Balinese cuisine in Legian

How the times have changed in Bali. Go back 15 years and there were 2-3 places to hang out in Legian, if you were an expat. Now we are awash in places and the expat scene is scattered. Longtime Legian restaurant, Glory, has seen it all, and Neil van Alkemade, the creative force behind Glory, recently responded to an article in The Weekend Australian. As well as Balinese cuisine, Glory also caters to a family audience, serving western food. Here’s an enlightening look into one of Bali’s longest serving restaurants.

Balinese buffet at Glory Restaurant in Legian

Sunday afternoon Ika, Jevon and I went down to Glory Restaurant on Jl. Legian in Legian, for some authentic Balinese food. The funny thing about Bali is that there are not many Balinese restaurants. There are a ton of roadside snack place out in the country, selling the cold mixture of rice, peanut sauce, sprouts and chili’s, but in the tourist scene it all Padang food from Sumatra, nasi goreng and Javanese cooking.

Travelling as an Aussie in Bali

Australians really were ones who drove the tourist boom in Bali, with surfers arriving in the 1970’s followed by waves of package tourists.

Kuta Beach was, and still is the epicenter of the Australian tourist scene in Bali, with Tuban to the south and Legian to the north also being favourites.

Cheap eats on Jl. Padma Legian Bali

Ika and I recently discovered an inexpensive place to eat in Legian, called Warung Yogya. Actually it was Ika’s sister Ningrum, the price shopper, who turned us on to it. Warung Yogya is located on Jl. Padma, across from one of those busy DVD stores.
