Bali Kuta Shopping

Xtreme Toys: Legian Bali

One of the eye catching shops on Jl. Legian in Legian is Xtreme Toys. If you pass by you will notice the strange looking skateboards and weird bicycles they have outside. The company tag line is ‘Hard core toys, Xtreme Toys n other cool stuff’. They used to be dedicated solely to fringe sports and the shop was stocked with the paraphernalia that supported them. On my recent visit, I saw that there are now more racks of t-shirts and accessories, to compliment the sports equipment.

Convenience store staff in Kuta Bali

Internet Outpost is a well known location on Poppies II in Kuta. Right next to it is a convenience store / pharmacy. Every time I pull up and park there the staff say hello and ask me where the electric chewing gum is, myself having shocked half of Kuta month ago. This shop has about 8 neatly dressed staff and hardly any customers. Today I went in and bought my usual Pocari Sweat, in preparation of a long blogging session next door.

Haircut in Salon Made: Kuta Bali

Friday afternoon I decided to trim the bush, the one on my head that is. Us Irish have hair like a thatch and I was feeling like getting rid of some of the heat retention. Usually I head to New Planet (formerly Monkey Planet) on Jl. Seminyak. They charge 70,000rp so today when I was in Kuta I stopped into a little place on Jl. Benesari just past Good Luck. Kuta is full of tiny one shop places offering haircuts, massage, facials, you name it.

Stussy: Kuta Bali

Stussy shop is a surfer oriented shop, located at the bottom end of Jl. Legian in Kuta. They don’t sell surf boards and leg ropes, just casual wear and accessories. In the surfing industry all the real margins are in accessories anyway. Who wants the agro of making a surfboard with just a $100 profit margin, when you can knock out shirt and shorts at a factory in Denpasar, for next to nothing and sell them for $30.

Raja’s still closed in Kuta Bali

Riding through Kuta Square today I noticed it was business as usual in regard to all the shops doing business. The number of shoppers wasn’t great though. Raja’s, the place that was bombed in October, is still closed. Raja’s itself will re open at Bintang supermarket in Seminyak and one wonders how long the old space will stay closed. The cashier who was injured (sister of the girl on the left) will re start work at the new Raja’s.

Interview with Made: Reny’s Art Shop III in Kuta Bali

Jl.Legian is what most tourists think of as the main street in Kuta (it isn’t, that would be Jl. Raya Kuta). The reason for this is the amount of shops and restaurants serving tourist needs. I have known one vendor for about 3 years now. Made from Karangasem used to work on Poppies II selling handicrafts, now she works at Reny’s Art shop III, which specializes in leather bags.
