Bali Kuta Restaurants
Discovery Mall Evolving
After a 10 year absence from Bali having had these years in Yogyakarta, Central Java, I returned in 2003 to see many changes had occurred on the island of Bali. One place that particularly took my attention was the near completion of the Discovery Mall on Jalan Kartika Plaza. At that time I can recall mentioning to my wife as we passed on our way from the airport that the white edifice would be a ‘white elephant’. How wrong was I in my statement. Of course every year I have returned to Bali since 2003 and over the years I have seen the Discovery Mall evolving into one of the best shopping complexes on the island. There are not many tourists to the island that dislike the place as it offers an excellent choice of restaurants, coffee shops and stores, but also affords spectacular ocean views from the rear of the building. Little by little over the years a new shop or restaurant has been added, another bank installed in the complex making it a delightful place to spend a few hours, or in some cases with over-enthusiastic shoppers, a whole day.

Yan’s Cafe: Tuban Bali
Funny how once in a while you get a blast from the past. Today while checking out places in Tuban, I wandered past the first hotel I stayed at in Bali, or at least, when I moved here on Jan 1st 2003. I remember arriving in Bali, loaded down with gear, a rolled up sign under my arm and enough Bootsnall t-shirts to start a stall. Catching a taxi from the airport, I ended up at the cheapest place on main street Kartika Plaza, Yan’s. Back then I paid 100,000rp a night and thought that was good, until I checked out Poppies Lane. Passing by today I asked the prices, which were 175,000rp for an AC room and 125,000rp for a fan room.

Warung Nikmat: Kuta Bali
Indonesian cooking and methodology combine, in a popular local warung in Kuta. Warung Nikmat serves Javanese style food, which includes beef rendang, in thick brown coconut sauce, light curry sauces and plates of vegetables, meats and types of fish. Warung Nikmat is located close to Hotel Bakung Sari (along Jl. Bakung Sari, which leads to Kuta Square / Jl. Kartika Plaza). The way things work is you line up / form a mob, around the horseshoe-shaped seving area. There are so many bodies inside that area pointing and serving, the only way to see what food you want, is to push in further. Pure madness, but why change if it works for you?

Kuta restaurants: Apache reggae bar
Just like Raja’s on Jl. Legian, I have passed by the Apache restoran and bar more times than I can remember. I have always been dubious about eating establishments that are a part of a club, but it was worth a gecko I thought. Sure am glad I did.

The NC (Nagasari Club) in Kuta Bali
The NC (Nagasari Club) is an impressive looking place, located on Jl. Singosari, in Kuta. Staff told me it is a bar / lounge / restaurant and that the place is only 2 months old, but the slump in tourism has affected there operations. Inside the place, a central raised stage, with a drum set sits in the middle of the bar area, a mini Centerstage perhaps. Staff told me Nagasari Club is open from 6.30am-2am, with many Japanese guests.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts come to Bali
Western civilization is on a steady slide back into the swamp. Part of the death of western culture, is the fact we have to much stuff to take care of, and so many things we ‘need’ that we spend many of our waking hours not actually living, but in pursuit of something. The latest temptation to come to Bali is Krispy Kreme, the marketing concept born in the US, and germinated around the globe.
