Bali Kuta Beach

Tuban beach on a sunny day

Stepping through Discovery Shopping Mall from Jl. Kartika Plaza, one could be anywhere in the world, London, Singapore, Jakarta. Stepping out the other side, one immediately realizes this is not London! Kuta Bay curves round, swinging past Kuta Beach to the right of the picture, and down towards the airport. If you really wanted to you could could walk from a Kuta guest house down the beach and get pretty close to the airport, a novel way of leaving.

Kuta Cowboys: The rodeo is in town everyday in Bali

Kuta Cowboys as they are known, are gigolos that hang around the beach looking for foreign women or looking to be picked up by them. The term is so common and the routine so well known that its business as normal in the island of the Gods. Apparently there was a travel survey a couple of years ago that asked travelers about their sexual activity. Who do you think would be the most promiscuous travelers in the world? American students in Europe? Aussies surfers in Bali? How about Germans in Thailand? It actually is Japanese women in Bali. Surprising that the shyest traveler is also the most promiscuous, but the Kuta Cowboys have latched onto that scene very well. Many of them speak Japanese and being able to break the ice and introduce them to a ready built 'local scene' under the palm trees is all it takes.

Sailfin: Restaurant at The Wave, Kuta Bali

dessert042205.jpgThe Wave in the latest new thing in Kuta and it comprises a huge downstairs bar with dance floor, upstairs coffee and snack bar on the top balcony and inside Sailfin restaurant. I had to try this place out and since Sean has gone I went alone. The décor is white and purple, elegant with white table cloths. I sat by the window overlooking Kuta Beach and was served attentively by 2 female members of staff. One other table of Australian tourists seemed to be enjoying their lunch with much laughter.

Lunch at Classic Cafe: Discovery Mall Tuban

Leaving it late for lunch today I remembered a place in Discovery Shopping Mall in Tuban, that overlooks the ocean. Classic Cafe is a unique little place that has outside seating under shades and an inside area. In the evenings they also have band. Walking through the mall, I wasn’t tempted to buy anything, but did see one encouraging sight, a young lady handing out beer vouchers (won’t see any of that under Sharia Law). Upon closer investigation I found out the vouchers were an inviation to buy something first and get a beer. Oh well, I still like their style, pretty girls and beer are a winner.

Sunset in Kuta Bali

sunset091605.jpgOne of the pluses to living in Bali is the sunsets and Thursday evening I strolled down to Pantai Kuta to check out what was going on. Sitting upstairs in the Southern Cross, the 2 storey restaurant at Kuta Midway, I learned it has recently become The Oriental. The place was always low-key and friendly and very bare bones upstairs. It looks exactly the same except there are 2 huge Chinese lanterns and the Southern Cross sign is covered up. The new owner is a Chinese guy from Jakarta and the menu features Chinese and western food. Maybe he's hoping to cash in on some of those Taiwanese tour buses. If he can get them on a regular basis he'll do okay. I’ll still think of the places as the Southern Cross though. One of the waitresses told me she gets 400,000rp per month, that's $40, plus one meal a day. Not too much room for fun in that budget.

Learning to surf in Bali

girls_board053004.jpgThis morning I got an email from a lady who had just signed up for a 3-day beginning surf lesson with us. She was coming in August but already excited about and asked me what exercises she should do before hand. Being a crappy surfer, but a great bullshiter, I told her yoga, as the 'sun salutation' is similar to surfing! Well it is a funny kind of way, the stance is similar to the pop-up. Reading the email I could remember my own excitement when I took a surfing lesson a couple of years ago.

Kecak dance on Kuta Beach Bali

Walking along Pantai Kuta (Kuta Beach ) at sunset, I always see a variety of people, ranging from Japanese surfers, newly arrived pale skin tourists admiring their torched arms and legs, Muslim tourists from Java ogling Europeans in tiny bathing suits and school groups trying to ensnare an unsuspecting foreigner into their question and answer routine.
