Bali Kuta Beach

Kuta Beach in January 2007

kuta beach baliThis morning on Kuta Beach, the sun was shining and the tourists who were around, there enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. Down at the bottom end of Kuta Beach, between the pasar seni (art market) and Jl. Pantai Kuta, is a shady walkway, that is popular with older tourists. I spotted an Aussie flag strung up on a tree, at one drink stand. The chairs were empty, apart from the staff, patiently waiting for thirsty customers. Just a few hundred meters north, around the bend on Kuta Beach, dozens of surfers were making the most of the small waves that trickled in. Massage ladies sat well wrapped up in sarongs, long sleeves and hats, under tall palm trees. “You want massage, you want massage, just 50,000rp for 1 hour I give to you.”

Ninety Degree Bar & Restaurant in Kuta Bali

People taking a break on Kuta Beach might like to go for a spot of lunch, that is within a short walk. That is exactly what, Toby, Maya, Ollie, Asia and myself did today. The deal with Bali, is that on the busy main streets, rents are high, making restaurants more expensive. Down the narrow alleys the rents are cheaper, so the costs are lower for food. The nearest place to the beach on Poppies II is Ninety Degree Bar & Restaurant, located at the first 90 degree bend in Poppies II, 100 meters from the beach. Today was hot, but the upstairs area of the place enjoyed sea breezes.

Kuta Beach hassles: How to avoid them

A recent article on VirtualTourist.com, talked about one guy’s experience on Kuta Beach. Kuta does have a nice beach for sure, and we are spoiled for location. It would be possible, if I was more of a water lover, to ride 1 block from Jl. Legian, park my bike, go for a swim for 30 minutes, shower off for 500rp, and carry on my day. Who knows, maybe sometime in the future I will make that a part of my day, but anyhow, its always there.

New World Surf Record Set in Bali

In a rare spell of drop-in heaven rather than surf break hell, surfers in Bali have set a world record for the most people to ride a single wave.

So many travellers I have talked to in Indonesia over the years have raved about the beautiful sunsets to be seen throughout the 1,376 islands that constitute the archipelago.

Kuta Beach still beautiful

kuta beach baliPassing Kuta Beach this afternoon, I stopped for an instant to get a look at the goings and and to remind myself I live in a beautiful place. The entrance to the Kuta Beach, at the bottom of the beach road, Jl. Pantai Kuta, provides a particularly pleasant vie of the curving bay, low shady trees and the lifeguard tower. Imagine being lifeguard on Kuta Beach! You wouldn’t have to work that hard, but there would be plenty of time to reflect. If you are on Kuta Beach, the section between the 2 red and yellow flags is officially watched. Outside of that, you’re on your own.

Guide to Padma area in Legian Bali

Last year I wrote about the beach / surfing break at Jl. Padma, in Legian. For beginning / intermediate surfers, who are tired of Kuta Beach / Halfway etc., but like the idea of being downtown, Padma is a good option.

Travelling as an Aussie in Bali

Australians really were ones who drove the tourist boom in Bali, with surfers arriving in the 1970’s followed by waves of package tourists.

Kuta Beach was, and still is the epicenter of the Australian tourist scene in Bali, with Tuban to the south and Legian to the north also being favourites.

Catching a Setting Sun: Kuta, Bali

I have a large collection of sunrise and sunset photos and really didn't need anymore. However, a few people I know who were new to Bali wanted to see their first sunset over Kuta when I was there last time.
