Warung Kolega: Javanese food in Kerobokan Bali
Javanese food is a more refined type of cuisine, than that of Bali. You will find many places in the Kuta / Tuban area, as well as the Sunset Rd in Seminyak, displaying signs that offer food from Jember, Yogyakarta, Solo and other parts of Java. In Kerobokan, one such place is Warung Kolega.

Warung Batavia: Javanese food in Kerobokan Bali
Bali is loaded with varieties of Indonesian food and a favourite among people from Java is Warung Batavia, located at the top of Jl. Seminyak and Jl. Raya Kerobokan. Warung Batavia serves pre-cooked dishes in a nasi campur style set up. The dishes though, are Javanese. Batavia is the old name of Jakarta and this warung definitely leans away from the pedas (spicy) flavours to the manis (sweet) flavours.

Warung Traditional: Jl. Petitenget Seminyak Bali
Seminyak is loaded with restaurants and warungs. Jl. Oberoi is sometimes referred to as 'eat street' and leads directly into Jl. Petitenget, where the selection of high class eating places continues. One place I stopped into recently was Warung Traditional located across the street from Venue @ The Moon. Warung Traditional looks like a modern warung from the outside with a small tidy parking area and a shady set of tables, 2 of them raised in Japanese style. The place is simple inside with white table cloths, a bamboo roof and seating for about 50 people. Warung Traditional features a mostly Indonesian menu with a few western items, including Tomato Salad (17,500), Guacamole (19,500) and Avocado Shrimp Cocktail (22,500) in the Appetizer menu. My sate babi was fantastic.

Javanese food at Warung Batavia in Kerobokan Bali
Today Ika, Yenni and I took a taxi from my house in Seminyak to Warung Batavia in Kerobokan. The ride was only 5 minutes but under the scorching sun that can seem like a long walk. Around 9am I asked Ika and Yenni what they wanted for breakfast and Yenni said I like either nasi or rice, which we laughed at. No point in going to Café Moka as I was outnumbered 2-1. I suggested Warung Batavia and we delayed our departure for a brunch kind of time, realizing that Batavia is really set up for lunch. Arriving at 10.30am we were the only customers and the food was all untouched. I could see that Yenni, a Jakarta resident was immediately familiar with what was in front of her. We each got a plate of rice, the ladies going for nasi putih (white rice), myself nasi kuning (yellow rice colored with tumeric). Added to this were items of our choice. I chose anchovies and potatoes, plus fish soup with sour vegetables. The ensemble balanced out quite well.

Lunch at Warung Batavia in Kerobokan Bali
Warung Batavia was on the cards today for lunch and I swung in just before midday. Located on Jl Raya Kerobokan close to the top of the Sunset Rd. The thing I like about Batavia is the food is different than Padang food, in that the sauces have a different taste and the overall taste is sweeter.

The Half Moon: Jl. Oberoi in Seminyak Bali
Jl. Oberoi / Jl. Petitenget has a selection of good places to eat. Most of the fancy looking places I bypass on my way to the nasi padang joints. Last night I stopped into one called the Half Moon. Not knowing what to expect I stepped through an entrance way that led across a garden to a beautifully shaped bamboo / alang alang roof. The place was obviously put together by someone woh knows about design.

Warung Gossip: Still serving good grub in Kerobokan Bali
Warung Gossip is a place I used to frequent a lot, but haven't been to for a while. While rather cheap, its still more expensive than the other places nearer to my house like Warung Mimpi or Warung Murah. Today I went for lunch and the place was quiet. One new addition to Warung Gossip is the butt-ugly concrete wall separating guests from the view they used to come for. I see this all over Bali and it is a shame, neighbors not giving a damn what their walls or other constructions do to the landscape. My lunch was around 20,000rp and was good. They always knock out good food here and if you want the best spread come before 12.30pm when all the rhinos arrive to graze.

Venue @ The Moon: Kerobokan Bali
Jl. Oberoi is often described at Eat Street because of its array of good restaurants. If you follow Jl. Oberoi to the end and keep going you run into Jl. Petitenget which itself is developing into Eat Street2, with places like La Lucciola and The Living Room.
The latest addition to the area is Venue @ The moon, which opened in March 2005. This place markets itself as a trendy higher end restaurant / bar / nightclub and Sean and I went over for breakfast today. Venue @ The Moon is really easy to spot by it large sign and impressive shop entrance. We arrived at 8am after our 4.5 mile run and were the only customers. The staff, numbering about 8 was smartly dressed in black and was all super friendly.
