Barrie’s mum in Kuta Bali

Tuesday evening I joined Barrie, Candika and Barrie’s mum Marge, for a snack at Jogeg Bulan, the popular place on Poppies II in Kuta. I find the food there to be average, but the location is good.

Tea Time at Cafe Moka in Seminyak

You know that feeling you get some afternoons, you’ve had lunch, grilled fish & rice with a piece of cucumber. Its good, but you need that dairy fix. This afternoon I had that feeling and stopped into Cafe Moka Seminyak, a place I haven’t been for ages. The staff all said hello and asked me ‘Baru Datang?’(just arrived?). They said it was quiet without me, which was nice.

Backpacking in Bali

To get into the backpacking mentality, you have to think longterm. Backpackers are often on a year long, around the world trip. All over the world, guesthouses and youth hostels are the places backpackers aim for, simplicity and cost being the key. Even as I get older, I still feel most comfortable checking into a cheap guest house in Bali, as its low stress, and I feel as though I have the time to take it easy, explore, and do whatever without the meter running to fast.

Places to eat in Kuta: 1992

Times change, people change, places changes, prices go up. Sitting here in London I’m flicking through a Lonely Planet from 1992. My first trip to Bali was in 1993 and it intersting to what places LP recommends for eating in the Kuta area.

Warung Italia: Blue Ocean Beach Bali

This evening I went to dinner with my friend Darvis, and his daughter Rilka. Darvis makes some lovely painted postcards and posters, Rilka has just moved back to Britain, after 6 years in Germany. Both are linguists, and tonight Darvis got a chance to roll out his Italian, at Warung Italia, located on Jl. Arjuna at Blue Ocean Beach.

Evening at Discovery Mall in Tuban Bali

This evening I had dinner in one of the restaurants, at the back of Discovery Mall in Tuban. Barrie and his family were well familiar with the food options, as they have checked out the restaurants there before. We were joined by 2 ladies (Dina and Ani) from Yogyakarta, close to where Barrie’s wife, Candika lives.

Ocha’s Indonesian food Seminyak Bali

For the last 2 weeks, I have been hitting a little place for lunch every day. Each warung has its own slightly different style, sometimes the rendang is generous, but the sauce is weak, other times the sauce is great but the portions small. Ocha’s, formerly Warung Roadkill, is hitting the spot right now.

Travelling as an Aussie in Bali

Australians really were ones who drove the tourist boom in Bali, with surfers arriving in the 1970’s followed by waves of package tourists.

Kuta Beach was, and still is the epicenter of the Australian tourist scene in Bali, with Tuban to the south and Legian to the north also being favourites.

Marco Polo and Mie: Indonesia

One of my favourite places to obtain bakso Mie in Yogyakarta was Bakso Itu but unfortunately it has closed down. 'Meatballs with spaghetti in water' was one description I heard from an obviously ignorant traveller.
