Touring East Bali

Walking around Kuta, you will see hundreds of places offering day trips. Virtually every hotel has a tour counter, offering the same thing. If you want to get out for the day, its okay I suppose, but you will not experience what East Bali has to offer on a day trip.

Amlapura: East Bali

Most visitors to Bali will not visit Amlapura, firstly because it is in East Bali and secondly because nothing draws them.

Beaches in Candi Dasa

Candi Dasa used to have a good beach, but it washed away, because the locals destroyed the reef for lime. That is a well known story. There is however a bit of beach left, and I checked it out this weekend.

Nightlife in Candi Dasa

Candi Dasa has limited nightlife. There is one bar, I can’t remember the name of it, but its easy to find. It has live reggae music and is located at the far north end of the long strip of places.

Amlapura: Why visit?

Every time I’ve visited Amlapura I’ve got good vibes. maybe its just that being in East Bali gives good vibes, I don’t know, but I find Amlapura to be a fairly clean, typical Balinese town, with the usual streetside shops selling pots, pans, fans and stuff most tourists wouldn’t touch.

Accommodation in Candi Dasa Bali

On my recent visit to Candi Dasa, a local told asked where I was staying. I told him ‘Flamboyant’, the name of the guest house in Senkidu. The cost was 50,000rp per night. He told me that in Candi Dasa you can find places for 50,000rp, 150,000rp, 250,000, 350,000rp and so on, whatever your budget can afford. Here is a list of some of places in different price categories, in the Candi Dasa / Senkidu area.

Riding back from Candi Dasa in East Bali

East Bali really is the part of the island that I love coming to. Getting out to Candi Dasa, the colors just seem brighter, maybe its because the amount of tall trees and vegetation, outnumber the buildings.

Food in Candi Dasa

Staying at Flamboyant guest house in Senkidu, just outside Candi Dasa, I had an agreement with the staff, ocean front room, with no breakfast, for 50,000rp. I wanted to try new places to eat, and wanted a low price for the room, so it seemed a good idea.

Lontar engraving in Tenganan Bali

Balinese artist, Kadek Ardita, showed me his family’s collection of Geringsings. He also sells single ikats, batiks and cloths made from kashmir-like material. His art is actually engraving.
