The Lombok Ferry from Padangbai

Padangbai in East Bali is the traditional route to Lombok. Its ferries are large and leave every hour around the clock, allowing motorbikes cars and trucks. For those staying in the Kuta area, take the Bypass towards Sanur, hanging a right-left onto the Kusamba Bypass along the coast. This section of coastal road is complete and runs all the way to Kusamba, meaning you’re about 15km from Padangbai itself. As you enter the town keep going straight and you’ll run right into the ferry terminal.

Pasir Putih Beach East Bali

pasir putihEveryone is looking for the ‘hidden beach’, includung myself today. Driving along the road from Candi Dasa towards Amlapura, we shot through the village of Perasi and past the tiny entrance to the track that leads to Pasir Putih beach. Pulling a U’y, I foudn the entrance and warned Toby and Ika about the rocky entry. I have memories of dragging my friends Sean and Chris down this lane, only to make a navigational error, ending up at a dead end and unable to get the underpowered SUV back up the slope. That didn’t happen this time, and we made it to the beach. I could tell Toby was nervous, and he later told me he was scared of crashing. Pasir Putih is one of the best beaches in Bali and arriving everytime only confirms that for me. The setting is a lovely white sand beach, with local fishing boats a few bamboo warungs (was only 1 in 2003) and tall waving palms trees in the background.

Snorkeling in Candi Dasa in East Bali

My friend Toby told me he was hoping to do some snorkeling while in East Bali. Thinking about our options, Padangbai, Candi Dasa and Amed would all work. I’d never go snorkleing in Bali without a boat, after reading too many stories of lone Europeans gone for good, not able to get to shore after renting a snorkel from a local.

Charlie Sellers’ view of Padangbai Bali

Padangbai is a small fishing village in East Bali. I first ent in 1993, when it was teeming with backpackers and divers. Now its a backwater, with more sarong vendors than tourists. Still there are 3 white sand beaches, in Padangbai that might take your fancy. Back in 2004, Charlie Sellers visited Padangbai and gave us his impression.

Touring East Bali

Walking around Kuta, you will see hundreds of places offering day trips. Virtually every hotel has a tour counter, offering the same thing. If you want to get out for the day, its okay I suppose, but you will not experience what East Bali has to offer on a day trip.

Straight shot to Candi Dasa in East Bali

pondok bambuMy friend Toby is out here in Bali from Oregon. I’m pretty much his tour guide (my bill comes later!) and with that in mind chose where we went. Having Ika & Jevon along, meant our range of options was somewhat limited. I don’t want to spend a ton on accommodation, Toby wants and AC room, with a pool if possible and the kids of course don’t care to visit cultural places. My strategy was, jump on the Kusamba Bypass and head straight to Candi Dasa. The 3 main things that everybody wants (a toilet, food and a place to sleep) can be found there in abundance.

Hiking Gunung Agung in Bali

Since living in Bali I have had the opportunity to explore some of the more remote parts of the island. Back in July 2003, my friend Mick Turnbull suggested we climb Gunung Agung, the highest point in Bali. Here’s my account of that trip.

Pasir Putih beach: East Bali

Of all the beaches in Bali, the one that fullfills the vision of a tropical beach the best, is Pasir Putih in East Bali. Guide books are starting to mention it, but in 2003, when I first visited, there were virtually no other tourists.

Amlapura: Why visit?

Every time I’ve visited Amlapura I’ve got good vibes. maybe its just that being in East Bali gives good vibes, I don’t know, but I find Amlapura to be a fairly clean, typical Balinese town, with the usual streetside shops selling pots, pans, fans and stuff most tourists wouldn’t touch.
