Bali Museum Denpasar
This morning I headed off like Columbus, into the Denpasar traffic, hoping to find the Bali Museum. The museum is located in Puputan Square and after a couple of wrong turns, courtesy of the re-routing of the one-way system, I reached it. Puputan Square is the large grassy area, that commemorates the Puputan (ritual group suicide) in 1906. The side of the square where the Bali Museum sits, is shaded by lovely tall trees, creating an oasis of clam, in the midst of mayhem. Arriving at the front gate, a local immediately attached himself to me and followed me in. He directed me to a side office, which was closed, then told me he could show me around the grounds of Pura Agung Jagatnatha (for a fee).

Walking tour of Denpasar Bali
Denpasar offers a different type of scene to that found in the Kuta area. Not a tourist center, or even a party center, Denpasar is home to locals, Balinese from othe parts of the island, who work in Kuta, and other Indonesians who have moved here. It offers cheap accomodation, street food, cheap locally made goods and a nightmare traffic system. There are some highlights and my LP guide book points out a route that can be done on foot.

Ramayana Shopping Mall Denpasar Bali
Ramayana Shopping mall is a place most westerners don’t visit. But a trip to Denpasar might take you past this past. If you head north on Jl. Tueku Umar and keep going, taking the compulsory left turn, onto Jl. Diponegoro, you will see the large orange-brick Ramayana Mall on the right hand side.

Pasar Badung: Denpasar Bali
Pasar Badung is the huge market area in central Denpasar, famous among locals. Today I drove Ika, Jevon and my mother-in-law there, to check things out. You never quite know how somebody will react to a place. A westerner could view Pasar Badung as a wonderful example of Asian culture, or a stinking example of lack of hygiene and organization. But how would somebody from Java view it? The market is located on Jl. Veteren and took maybe 20 minutes to get to, because of traffic and my driving. Parking across the road on the Jl. Kartini, a Parkirman (parking attendant) quickly got 2,000rp out of me.

Pasar Badung market in Denpasar Bali
Denpasar means, ‘by the market’ and the biggest market in Denpasar, is Pasar Badung. Pasar Badung has 4 floors in a giant concrete structure that is rather like a parking structure. Different floors carry different goods, starting with the fruit and veg market outside. Inside the first floor is a large fish market and let me tell you, today it smelt like an Asian fish market.

Denpasar tourist offices
Denpasar is a maze, almost a nightmare of one-way streets. You take one wrong turn and you are funneled off into a main street heading to who knows where. Locals all know where they are going, but visitors feel like its a zoo.
